Feel Spiritual Pleasures

A person can easily feel the pleasure of giving into negative desires. When a person finds it difficult to overcome his desires, it is because he lacks an equal feeling of pleasure in spiritual matters.

So to overcome negative desires, we need to feel the pleasure of Torah study as a balance. That's why the prayer recited daily for the mitzvah of Torah study asks to feel the sweetness of Torah study.

Fwd: airline beauties and serenity and Limerick, Ireland

Serenity Is Emotional Freedom

Imagine how wonderful it would be if you could learn to be consistently serene. Serenity is emotional freedom and a general sense of well-being. It is a calm state of mind and body. When you are serene, your brain functions at its optimal level and you think at your best. Serenity is conducive for health and for recovery. Even a tiny bit of serenity is precious.

On day four we come to Limerick and the Shannon River:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5QfiH2LVJY

I thought you'd get a real kick out of these, especially those after the pictures.
You can take your $10 disposable camera or $50,000 of expensive video equipment, wait and wait for the rest of your life, and chances are that you will never get pictures like these.

Airline Announcements?
United Flight Attendant announced, 'People, people we're not picking out furniture here, find a seat and get in it!
*************************************

On landing, the stewardess said, 'Please be sure to take all of your belongings. If you're going to leave anything, please make sure it's something we'd like to have. '

*************************************
'There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 4 ways out of this airplane'
*************************************
An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard..  The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile, and give them a 'Thanks for flying our airline.'  He said that, in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment.  Finally, everyone had gotten off except for a little old lady walking with a cane.
She said, 'Sir, do you mind if I ask you a question?'
'Why, no, Ma'am,' said the pilot. 'What is it?'
The little old lady said, 'Did we land, or were we shot down?'
***************************************
As the plane landed and was coming to a stop at Ronald Reagan, a lone voice came over the loudspeaker: 'Whoa, big fella,  WHOA!'
*******************************************
After a particularly rough landing during thunderstorms in Memphis, a flight attendant on a Northwest flight announced, 'Please take care  when opening the overhead compartments because sure as hell everything has shifted after a landing like that.'
*************************************
Another flight attendant's comment on a less than perfect landing: 'We ask you to please remain seated as Captain Kangaroo bounces us to the terminal.'
*************************************
Overheard on an American Airlines flight into Amarillo, Texas on a particularly windy and bumpy day:  During the final approach, the Captain was really having to fight it.  After an extremely hard landing, the Flight Attendant said, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome
to Amarillo.  Please remain in your seats with your seat belts fastened while the Captain taxis what's left of our airplane to the gate!'

***********************************
"Your seat cushions can be used for flotation; and, in the event of an emergency water landing, please paddle to shore and take them with our compliments.'
***********************************
'As you exit the plane, make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants.  Please do not leave children or spouses......except for that gentleman over there.'
******************************************
Heard on Southwest Airlines just after a very hard landing in Salt Lake City .. The flight attendant came on the intercom and said, 'That was quite a bump, and I know what y'all are thinking.  I'm here to tell you it wasn't the airline's fault, it wasn't the pilot's fault, it wasn't the flight attendant's fault, it was the asphalt.'
****************************************
After a real crusher of a landing in Phoenix, the attendant came on with, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, please remain in your seats until Capt. Crash and the Crew have brought the aircraft to a screeching halt against the gate.  And, once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning bells are silenced, we'll open the door and you can pick your way through the
wreckage to the terminal.'

****************************************
Part of a flight attendant's arrival announcement: 'We'd like to thank you folks for flying with us today.  And, the next time you get the insane urge to go blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal tube, we hope you'll think of US Airways.'
****************************************
Heard on a Southwest Airline flight - 'Ladies and gentlemen, if you wish to smoke, the smoking section on this airplane is on the wing and if you can light 'em, you can smoke 'em.'
****************************************
A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom, 'Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking.  Welcome to Flight Number 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather ahead is good and, therefore, we should have a smooth and uneventful flight.  Now sit back and relax... OH, MY GOD!'  Silence followed, and after a few minutes, the captain came back on the intercom and said, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you earlier.
While I was talking to you the flight attendant accidentally spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!'

A passenger in Coach yelled, 'That's nothing. You should see the back of mine!'

Fwd: 1948 Buick Streamliner and peace of mind

We come to Limerick and I have the urge to tell short poems that rhyme and have a punch line and are off-color:

Having It All

Judaism has two terms for tranquility - "shalvah" and "menuchah." While they might appear to be similar, they really contradict each other.

Shalvah refers to a situation in which a person is not missing anything in life. He has everything he wants and therefore has no worries. He has a nice house with all the furnishings he can ask for. He has a large amount of cash handy to purchase whatever he wants. His business is going well, and all of his property and possessions are entirely safe. He has no enemies who would want to cause him harm. There is peace in his world. He is entirely healthy. He is respected and people accept his opinion. He has no competitors who are striving to diminish is stature. He has no obligations to others. He is successful at whatever he does. This is shalvah.

And it's a negative trait.

Why? Because if you feel that everything must be perfect, you are in danger that if the details of your life are not to your liking, you will suffer. The many difficulties that arise in your life will prevent you from experiencing pleasure and peace of mind.

Menuchah, on the other hand, is a virtue. It is a state in which a person lives with peace of mind since he does not need anything! Not because he has all he would wish for, but because his attitude is one of accepting his present situation. He will be aware that all benefits and damages in life are dependent on the will of the Almighty. He has trust that whatever is decreed for him is what will occur. If he has what he would like, that is good; and if he is not able to get it, that, too, is for the good. He does not feel anxiety about possible misfortunes. He knows that "every bullet has its special address," and he wants only that which the Almighty chooses for him. If you attain the trait of menuchah, you will feel inner peace regardless of your financial situation and whether or not you have the approval of others.

The person who has reached this level of not needing all that he would wish for is saved from all kinds of frustration. People will not have anything to criticize him for. Even if someone does wrongly accuse him of anything, he does not take it to heart. He knows that he is being accused in error, and is able to feel an inner joy. This level is called menuchah.

Seek to live a life of menuchah. Obviously you will have more peace of mind, if you accept that anything that happens is for the best. Even an election (written on November 8 2012).

Fwd: Metal Storm -- The deadliest weapon ever and alcohol addiction and the Blarney Castle Grounds

>

When one believes in a higher power, it gives one faith to know that whatever happens is for the best. This is what faith changes. While one can be disappointed, despair has no place, because the sun will come up tomorrow, because G-d promises that it will. On today November 7, 2012 after the election, one might be disappointed in the results of election, but one must have faith that the results are for the best.

On our trip to Blarney, Ireland to kiss the Blarney stone, we appreciate the beautiful private grounds of the privately owned castle

Alcohol addiction -- like any addiction -- is difficult to overcome. Alcoholics Anonymous have a 12 Step Plan. It is really the basis for recovery from any addiction to a desire. We think we are in control of our lives. As long as we think we are in control of our lives, it is nearly impossible to break addictions or to change our character. The essence of Alcoholics Anonymous and similar efforts is for the person to realize that he does not have ultimate control over his life and that he needs help from a Higher Power.

The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous

  1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol-that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditations to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twersky, founder and medical director of Gateway Rehabilitation Center, an addiction recovery program, tells the story of a man who refused to be a mentor for a recovering atheist alcoholic unless he agreed to pray every day. The alcoholic professed his disbelief in God, but agreed to what he felt was a ridiculous demand. After a couple of months the recovering alcoholic told his mentor that praying made a world of difference in his recovery. Said the recovering alcoholic, "I still don't believe in God, but now I realize that I am not God!"

One person and the Almighty is a majority. Turn your problems over to the Almighty and ask for help. You have a better chance of succeeding. They don't call Him "Almighty" for nothing. Recognizing that God has the power to help, gives you merit to receive His help. Our goal in life is to perfect ourselves, to emulate God -- and only if we recognize His existence and His power are we able to do that

Fwd: Gopak (Hopak) - Igor Moiseyev ballet and count your blessing and Kiss the Blarney Stone

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgjhLuSV8CU

Count Your Blessings

Develop a deep sense of appreciation for what you have. The Creator has given you many gifts for your welfare and enjoyment. Realize how foolish it would be for someone to needlessly make himself miserable when he has so much wealth!

Failing to focus on what you have is depriving yourself of much joy. Don't commit this crime against yourself and our Creator.

Make a list of your possessions, in order to increase your appreciation for them. (Remember to include those things that you're most likely to take for granted!)

One of the worlds' most famous traditions: Kissing the Blarney Stone. What most people don't know, is that is leftover spirituality from the Jews as the stone is supposed to be from either the wailing wall or the Head Priest's ceremonial breast plate:

Fwd: Historical NYC Photos Seldom seen before and Jewish license plates done to a Yiddish song and Blarney Castle

Creatively Respond, Don't React

When a difficulty arises today, try to delay any negative reaction. Think of possible solutions. Clarify your goal and ask yourself, "What is the best thing for me to say and do right now to reach my goal?" and, "What creative solution can I think of right now?"

Ask yourself: "What would a wise person suggest to me right now?" Try to arrive at a creative solution that will turn the difficulty into a triumph

Fwd: What I learned about Whiskey

Seek and You Shall Find

Every person is obligated to love to do acts of kindness. But how can G-d legislate that we will "love" doing kindness?!

The concept of loving to do kindness means that it is not sufficient to wait until someone approaches you and asks you to help. Your love of kindness should be so strong that you actively seek out such opportunities.

From the bible, our example of this kind of pro-active kindness is our Father Abraham who had his own kindness hotel, specializing in taking care of travelers. This week, in the bible, his travelers turned out to be angels!!

Love Yehuda Lave

I had always been against the abuse of liquor. Many People sang its praises, but it usually seemed to be people that abused it. As I have aged (hopefully like a good wine---whiskey once it finishes doesn't improve any more with age), I realize that there are some benefits if the consumption is controlled. Young people don't seem to be able to do this, so I recommend a minimum drinking age of 50. The main benefits come when you do it on the Sabbath when you are not going to drive anywhere (so there is no danger of thinking you are all right to drive) and you are going to take a nap to sober up. A little liquor (wine or whiskey), can actually make an old body feel relaxed.

Here is what I learned on my completed trip to Ireland.

A whiskey simply described as a Scotch, Irish, or Canadian whiskey is most likely to be a blend. A blend typically contains whiskey from many distilleries so that the blender can produce a flavor consistent with the brand, and the brand name (e.g., Chivas Regal, Canadian Club) will usually not therefore contain the name of a distillery. Jameson Irish Whiskey is an example of an exception, as it comes from only one distillery.

I brought back a bottle of Jameson from  Ireland.

Single malt whisky is a whiskey made at one particular distillery from a mash that uses one particular malted grain, which is ordinarily barley.

With a license to distil Irish whiskey from 1608, the Old Bushmills Distillery in the north coast of Ireland is the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world.[11]

Types

Malted barley is an ingredient of some whiskies.

Whisky or whisky-like products are produced in most grain-growing areas. They differ in base product, alcoholic content, and quality.

Malts and grains are combined in various ways:

  • Single malt whisky is whisky from a single distillery made from a mash that uses only one particular malted grain. Unless the whisky is described as "single-cask", though, it will contain whisky from many casks, and different years, so the blender can achieve a taste recognisable as typical of the distillery. In most cases, the name of a single malt will be that of the distillery, with an age statement and perhaps some indication of some special treatments such as maturation in a port wine cask.
  • Blended malt whisky is a mixture of single malt whiskies from different distilleries. If a whisky is labelled "pure malt" or just "malt" it is almost certain to be a blended malt whisky. This was formerly called a "vatted malt" whisky.
  • Blended whiskies are typically made from a mixture of malt and grain whiskies — often along with neutral spirits, caramel, and flavouring. A whisky simply described as a Scotch, Irish, or Canadian whisky is most likely to be a blend. A blend typically contains whisky from many distilleries so that the blender can produce a flavour consistent with the brand, and the brand name (e.g., Chivas Regal, Canadian Club) will usually not therefore contain the name of a distillery. Jameson Irish Whiskey is an example of an exception, as it comes from only one distillery.
  • Cask strength (also known as barrel-proof) whiskies are rare, and usually only the very best whiskies are bottled in this way. They are bottled from the cask undiluted or only lightly diluted.
  • Single cask (also known as single-barrel) whiskies are usually bottled by specialist independent bottlers, such as Duncan Taylor, Gordon & MacPhail, and Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, amongst others. Each bottle of a single-barrel whisky is from an individual cask, and often the bottles are labelled with specific barrel and bottle numbers. The taste of these whiskies may vary substantially from cask to cask within a brand.

Whiskies do not mature in the bottle, only in the cask, so the "age" of a whisky is only the time between distillation and bottling. This reflects how much the cask has interacted with the whisky, changing its chemical makeup and taste. Whiskies that have been bottled for many years may have a rarity value, but are not "older" and will not necessarily be "better" than a more recently made whisky matured in wood for a similar time. After a decade or two, additional aging in a barrel will also not necessarily make a whisky "better".

Most whiskies are sold at or near an alcoholic strength of 40% abv, which is the statutory minimum in some countries[16] – although the strength can vary, and cask-strength whisky may have as much as twice that alcohol percentage.

  • Cask strength (also known as barrel-proof) whiskies are rare, and usually only the very best whiskies are bottled in this way. They are bottled from the cask undiluted or only lightly diluted.

American whiskey is distilled from a fermented mash of cereal grain. It must have the taste, aroma, and other characteristics commonly attributed to whiskey.

Some types of whiskey listed in the United States federal regulations[16] are:

These types of American whiskey must be distilled to no more than 80% alcohol by volume, and any addition of colouring or flavouring is prohibited. These whiskeys must then be aged in new charred-oak containers, except for corn whiskey. Corn whiskey does not have to be aged but, if it is aged, it must be in un-charred oak barrels or in used barrels. The aging of corn whiskey usually is brief, e.g., six months.

If the aging for one of these types of whiskey reaches two years or beyond, the whiskey is then additionally designated as "straight" e.g., "straight rye whiskey". A whiskey that fulfils all these above requirements except that it is derived from less than 51% of any one specific type of grain can be called simply a "straight whiskey" without naming a grain.

There are also some other categories of whiskey that are recognized in the US regulations,[16] such as:

  • Blended whisky, which is a mixture which contains straight whisky or a blend of straight whiskies and, separately or in combination, whiskey or neutral spirits, and may also contain flavourings and colourings.
  • Light whisky, which is produced in the United States at more than 80% alcohol by volume and stored in used or uncharred new oak containers.
  • Spirit whisky, which is a mixture of neutral spirits and at least 5% of certain stricter categories of whisky.

American blended whiskeys combine straight whiskey with grain neutral spirits (GNS), flavourings and colourings. The percentage of GNS must be disclosed on the label and may be as much at 80% on a proof gallon basis. Blended whiskey has the same alcohol content as straight whiskey but typically has a milder flavour.

Another important labelling in the marketplace is Tennessee whiskey, of which Jack Daniel's, George Dickel, Collier and McKeel,[17] and Benjamin Prichard's[18] are the only brands currently bottled. In practice, it is essentially identical to bourbon whiskey.[19][20] Whiskey sold as "Tennessee whiskey" is defined as Bourbon under NAFTA[21] and at least one other international trade agreement,[22] and is similarly required to meet the legal definition of Bourbon under Canadian law.

Distillation spread from Ireland to Scotland (about one hundred years later) and originated from the European continent in the later medieval centuries.[4][8] Because the islands had few grapes to make wine with, barley beer was used instead, resulting in the development of whisky.[7] In the Irish Annals of Clonmacnoise in 1405, the first written record of whisky attributes the death of a chieftain to "taking a surfeit of aqua vitae" at Christmas.[9] In Scotland, the first evidence of whisky production comes from an entry in the Exchequer Rolls for 1494 where malt is sent "To Friar John Cor, by order of the king, to make aquavitae", enough to make about 500 bottles.[10

Irish whiskeys

Various Irish whiskeys
Main article: Irish whiskey

Irish whiskeys are normally distilled three times, Cooley Distillery being the exception as they also double distill.[32] Though traditionally distilled using pot stills, the column still is now used to produce grain whiskey for blends. By law, Irish whiskey must be produced in Ireland and aged in wooden casks for a period of no less than three years, although in practice it is usually three or four times that period.[33] Unpeated malt is almost always used, the main exception being Connemara Peated Malt whiskey.

There are several types of whiskey common to Ireland: single malt, single grain, blended whiskey and pure pot still whiskey.

Scotch whiskies

Various Scotch whiskies
Main article: Scotch whisky

Scotch whiskies are generally distilled twice, although some are distilled a third time and others even up to twenty times.[36] Scotch Whisky Regulations require anything bearing the label "Scotch" to be distilled in Scotland and matured for a minimum of three years in oak casks, among other, more specific criteria.[37] An age statement on the bottle, in the form of a number, must reflect the age of the youngest Scotch whisky used to produce that product. A whisky with an age statement is known as guaranteed age whisky.[38] Scotch whisky without an age statement may, by law, be as young as three years old.[39]

The basic types of Scotch are malt and grain, which are combined to create blends. Many, though not all, Scotch whiskies use peat smoke to treat their malt, giving Scotch its distinctive smoky flavour. Scotch malt whiskies are divided into five main regions: Highland, Lowland, Islay, Speyside and Campbeltown.

Finally there are good web sites that give you good explanations, here is one that explained it easily:

Fwd: Stress? and Cultivate Gratitude and put a Cork, Ireland (into it)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKQ2uo_UsRg

Cultivate Gratitude

Lack of gratitude is at the root of discontent. In order to be consistently serene, we must master the attribute of being grateful to the Creator for all His gifts.

As the Bible (Deuteronomy 26:11) states, "Rejoice with all the good the Almighty has given you." This does not negate our wanting more. But it does mean that we have a constant feeling of gratitude since as long as we are alive, we always have much to be grateful for.
