China's Got Talent Liu Wei plays piano with toes and the 929 Project

Overcoming Worry

Many worriers believe worry is part of their nature and it is impossible to rid themselves of it. But worry is just a habit. Some people started this habit at a young age, so it may seem to be their nature.

But any habit can be changed. Even a chronic worrier can learn to lead a worry-free life. If you look at worry as a bad habit you picked up, and you try to think more sensibly, you have a good chance of overcoming your habit.

Borrowing from Daf Yomi, the 91 year world wide Jewish practice of studying a page of Talmud a day that was conceived and initially promoted in Poland by Rabbi Yehuda Meir Shapiro, 929 was officially inaugurated at the President's Residence  in Jerusalem on the second night of Hanukka.

929, the brainchild of Bayit Yehudi MK and Deputy Education Minister Avi Wortzman, is the daily study -five days a week- of a Biblical verse.  The project which officially begins on Sunday, December 21, aims at being a primarily Jewish all inclusive and accessible experience whereby Jews from every imaginable background will come together to study the verse of the day, derive their own interpretations and discuss them with each other to create as broad an understanding as possible of the Bible and thereby identify with the best selling book of all time regardless of whether they are religious or secular or something in between. The project cycle is of three-and-three-quarter years' duration, with the last verse scheduled to be read on the 70th anniversary of Israel's Declaration of Independence.

President Reuven Rivlin who together with his wife Nechama hosts a regular Bible circle, as have his predecessors before him, said that he was excited at the prospect of embarking on something that was a little different, and in fact unique. The presidents of Israel all saw a value in studying the Bible he said, but in connecting with 929, he personally was studying the Bible not only as president but in the same way as any citizen of the state.  He said that for him, the Bible represents the identity card of the Jewish People, which is also the identity card of all humanity.

Although the festival of Hanukka is not mentioned in the Bible, said Rivlin, it was an appropriate time to launch the initiative, because the Bible spreads light in the world and Hanukka is the festival of lights. Moreover, there is much Biblical symbolism in Hanukka which reflects a person's marching to his inner truth; freedom of the minority; and the readiness to go against all odds in pursuit of a dream. "That's the spirit of the Bible, the spirit of a person of faith," said Rivlin.

Professors Avigdor Shinan and Yair Zakovitz who engaged in a demonstration of Biblical polemics demonstrated another Biblical connection with Hanukka in that the first night of Hanukka falls on the 25th of Kislev and there are 25 words in the Hebrew version of the first verse of Genesis.

Two readings of the verse by two other people also demonstrated the influence of intonation on interpretation.

Rabbi Benny Lau who is the spiritual leader of the project lauded former education minister Shai Piron for having made 929 one of the flagship projects of the Education Ministry. Lau said that 929 could be accessed on the Internet, (www.929.org.il), on social media, and on smart phones, and would include commentaries posted by people studying the verse of the day.

Wortzman said that the realization of a dream was a rarity, and he felt privileged to be able to realize his dream.

Piron relating to the fact that Wortzman had been trying for five years to get the dream off the ground, without any success till now, attributed the change in attitude to the lack of relevance in people's lives.  "People are looking for something meaningful," he said. "They're afraid of a meaningless existence.  The Bible gives us values such as kindness to the stranger and care for the widow and the orphan – and these values are meaningful.  We are all in search of meaning in our lives."Hanukka falls on the 25th of Kislev and there are 25 words in the first verse of the Bible in its Hebrew verses.

THE MAGIC BANK ACCOUNT and how do you know you are ready to get married?

An Attitude Of Gratitude

Do all that you can to express gratitude to others for anything they do for you. This will help you feel gratitude for the Almighty also.

Today, think of someone you gain from but have not expressed sufficient gratitude. Make a special effort to express gratitude to that person.

THE MAGIC BANK ACCOUNT

THE AUTHOR IS NOT KNOWN. IT WAS FOUND IN THE BILLFOLD OF COACH PAUL BEAR BRYANT, ALABAMA, AFTER HE DIED IN 1982

The Magic Bank Account

Imagine that you had won the following *PRIZE* in a contest: Each morning your bank would deposit $86,400 in your private account for your use. However, this prize has rules:

1. Everything that you didn't spend during each day would be taken away from you.

2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account.

3. You may only spend it.

4. Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400 for that day.

5. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say,"Game Over!". It can close the account and you will not receive a new one.

What would you personally do?

You would buy anything and everything you wanted right? Not only for yourself, but for all the people you love and care for. Even for people you don't know, because you couldn't possibly spend it all on yourself, right?

You would try to spend every penny, and use it all, because you knew it would be replenished in the morning, right?

ACTUALLY, This GAME is REAL ...

Shocked ??? YES!

Each of us is already a winner of this *PRIZE*. We just can't seem to see it.

The PRIZE is *TIME*

1. Each morning we awaken to receive 86,400 seconds

as a gift of life.

2. And when we go to sleep at night, any remaining time is Not credited to us.

3. What we haven't used up that day is forever lost.

4. Yesterday is forever gone.

5. Each morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time WITHOUT WARNING...

SO, what will YOU do with your 86,400 seconds?

Those seconds are worth so much more than the same amount in dollars.  Think about it and remember to enjoy every second of your life, because time races by so much quicker than you think.

So take care of yourself, be happy, love deeply and enjoy life!

Here's wishing you a wonderful and beautiful day. Start "spending"...

words that make jokes and Europe's attitute to Israel--no laughing matter

Honor Is Temporary

When a person feels sad because someone did not show him respect or give him approval, he can say to himself, "What will I actually gain if this person shows me respect or approval? And what do I really lose by his insulting me?"

The answer is: Nothing! Both honor and humiliation are very temporary states, and rarely make practical differences in our lives. So why get upset because someone failed to honor you?

Someone who internalizes the truth of this concept, will never feel sad about lack of honor or approval.

EUROPE IS GONE

What can one say about Europe? I imagine that if one wants to be bitterly truthful then one could easily say that Hitler has in effect triumphed. He branded the Jews as the root of all troubles and proclaimed that the "final" and only solution to the "Jewish problem" was to eradicate all Jews from the face of the earth. And as we all know, he followed through on his genocidal program.

A great deal of Europe, its leaders, intellectuals and common folk, willfully and almost gleefully cooperated in this genocide. Many did so actively while many more Europeans did so passively. Once the horrors of the Holocaust were revealed after the war ended, this irrational and pathological hatred of the Jews went underground. After all, it was too shameful to admit that the continent that prided itself on the advancement of civilization could be guilty of such organized, government-sponsored inhumanity and cruelty.

So, most Europeans shielded themselves from any true feelings of guilt by simply stating that they were ignorant as to what was occurring. The Vatican and other Christian churches aided many Nazis and other war criminals in escaping from Europe and settling rather comfortably in other continents, notably South America.

As penance for their atrocious behavior, many European countries, though not all, voted for the establishment of the state of Israel and granted the nascent nation diplomatic and sometimes even economic recognition and help. There the matter seemed to rest during the decade of the 1950s.

But the state of Israel, always being the burr under the world's saddle, would not let the matter rest. The wound was too deep and raw and the world would not be allowed to so easily forget what had happened.

So, Israel captured Adolf Eichmann and placed him on trial for his crimes against the Jewish people and humanity. The trial, which lasted almost a year, revealed in a stark and graphic way what had happened to the Jewish people on European soil from 1939 to 1945. It was not only Eichmann and the Nazis that were the defendants in that most bruising and bitter trial, but in a very real sense, Europe itself was on trial.

And, when Eichmann was justifiably found guilty and executed for his crimes, subliminally Europe was also judged to be guilty and complicit in the horror of the Holocaust. Europe has never forgiven Israel for that trial and verdict. It is well aware that it is guilty but can never own up to this guilt.

In line with its time-honored obsession with the Jewish people and its innate necessity to scapegoat Jews for all of Europe's problems, Europe has turned its enmity, in an unremitting fashion, against the Jewish state. Israel should be pilloried and boycotted, delegitimized and isolated, while the noble Palestinians – fomenters of worldwide terrorism, intifadas and recurring wars – are worthy of diplomatic recognition, media support, financial aid and moral justification.

This is Europe's revenge against the Jews for surviving the Holocaust and thereby instilling the unease and guilt that Europe feels towards Jews, Judaism and the Jewish state.

To use a Christian phrase, Europe is sorely in need of redemption. Catholic countries such as Ireland, Portugal and Spain have not digested the lessons of history vis-à-vis the relationship of the Church and the Jews over the centuries. The liberal Left refuses to deal with its history of oppression and anti-Semitism that Marxism, the Soviet Union and the Left generally has inflicted on European and world Jewry.

It again bans circumcision and kosher slaughter, all in the name of some lofty ideals of infant and animal rights. All of this naturally occurs in the background of rampant child abuse and slaughter of humans, the repression of women, the elimination of minorities and the other pernicious facets of intolerant social norms, which characterize Palestinian and Islamic society.

Perfidious and hypocritical as it is, Europe nonetheless claims the high moral ground for itself, sneering condescendingly at the United States and feels justly entitled to be the moral judge over the state of Israel. Europe regrets not so much the Holocaust itself, but that the Jews survived it and because of it were allowed to create a nation state for themselves.

It will allow for the creation of Holocaust memorials and museums but objects to the state of Israel being included in the Jewish story that it depicts. Hamas is no longer a terrorist organization as far as Europe is concerned, but Israel should be hauled before the International Court of Justice at The Hague.

Even George Orwell would be astounded to see how skewed the vision and policies of Europe are today. Only time will tell if Europe is ever able to right its perverse attitude towards Jews and Israel. History teaches us that it will be doomed somehow if it does not do so.

Fwd: Oranges and a kinder world

Follow Health Instructions

A famous physician used to relate that in his entire career of treating thousands of patients, he had only one patient who followed his instructions exactly without deviation. The patient was the great sage, Rabbi Yisroel Salanter -- because he regarded doctor's orders as the fulfillment of the Torah obligation to guard one's health.

Someone once came to Rabbi Salanter's room and found him perusing a medical guide to exercise. He had the book open and did every exercise exactly as described -- since the doctor had advised him to do so.

KEY IDEAS FOR A KINDER WORLD

  1. Be resolved to become a kind person. How do you do this? Think, speak, and act with kindness.
  2. Love kindness. When you do what you love, you are happy. A master of kindness is a master of joy.
  3. When encountering someone, let your first thoughts be, "What kind words can I say to this person and what kind things can I do?"
  4. Keep asking people, "What can I do for you?"
  5. Everyone needs encouragement. Ask yourself, "What can I say that will be encouraging?"
  6. Wherever you are, you are there for a reason. Ask yourself, "Since I am here now, what kindness can I do?"
  7. Every kind person is unique. You have unique talents, skills, knowledge, and resources. Utilize them to help others in your own unique way. Ask yourself, "In what unique ways can I be kind?"
  8. Do a daily act of kindness without letting anyone know who did it.
  9. Learn from every kind act you see or read about. Ask yourself, "What can I learn from this to be kinder?"
  10. A valuable rule is, "Even if you don't feel like a kind person, you can still act like one." Think of a kind act you can do that you don't feel like doing.
  11. Think of a kindness telephone call that you can make today.
  12. Think of a kindness note, letter, or email that you can write today.
  13. View your own pain, distress, and suffering as tools for empathy and understanding. Ask yourself, "How can this experience help me be a kinder person?"
  14. Keep asking yourself, "If I were this person, what would I want others to do for me?"
  15. As soon as you recognize a need, volunteer to do something about it. Don't wait until you are asked.
  16. Listen to those who need a listening ear. Listening to someone is a great act of kindness.
  17. If you know that someone is looking for a job or needs to earn more money, ask yourself, "What can I do to make it happen?"
  18. Be empathetic and compassionate. Be resolved not to cause distress, pain, or loss with your words and action.
  19. Learn from everyone. Keep asking people, "What kindnesses from others have you appreciated?"
  20. Pray for the welfare of others.

Mindreading software could eavesdrop on your secret inner voice and showdown of the unbeatables

Not Speaking Against Others

Some people try to build themselves up by speaking against others.

They believe that talking about the faults and limitations of others makes themselves seem better and more elevated than those people.

It is a total illusion to think that you are actually building yourself up when you put others down.

Speaking against other people is a violation of the Torah commandment to refrain from speaking lashon hara (negative speech).

Someone who speaks against others without a practical and constructive purpose is lowering himself by doing so.

Every time you control what you say and don't speak against others, you become a higher and more elevated person.

Obama: May Hanukkah Embolden Us to Do What is Right

U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday sent Jews around the world his traditional greeting in honor of the holiday of Hanukkah.

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, began on Tuesday evening.

"Over the eight nights of Hanukkah, Jews across America, Israel, and the world will remember an ancient triumph of freedom over oppression, and renew their faith in the possibility of miracles large and small," said Obama.

"Even in the darkest, shortest days of winter, the Festival of Lights brims with possibility and hope.  The courage of the Maccabees reminds us that we too can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.  The candles of the Menorah remind us that even the smallest light has the power to shine through the darkness.  And the miracle at the heart of Hanukkah – the oil that lasted for eight nights instead of only one – reminds us that even when the future is uncertain, our best days are yet to come," he added.

"May this Hanukkah embolden us to do what is right, shine a light on the miracles we enjoy, and kindle in all of us the desire to share those miracles with others. From my family to yours, Chag Sameach," concluded Obama.

The Use of Fire May Have Begun In Israel 350,000 Years Ago and Ashdod

>

It's In Your Mind

Self-confidence is created and stored in your mind. What is wonderful about this is that your mind is always with you, day and night and in all seasons, wherever you go.

Everyone has moments of self-confidence There are memories of self-confidence stored in every person's brain. This is true of every person alive. And it is true for you.

All your positive experiences of self-confidence are recorded in your brain.

The Use of Fire May Have Begun In Israel 350,000 Years Ago

The first Bar-B-que?

The first Bar-B-que?

A study of artifacts in an ancient cave near Haifa indicated that humans first started using fire there approximately 350,000 years ago, Scienemag.org reported.

The Tabun Cave, located approximately 12 miles south of Haifa, "is unique in that it's a site with a very long sequence," according to University of Haifa archaeologist Ron Shimelmitz. His new study examined  "step by step how the use of fire changed in the cave."

The Tabun Cave is rich in artifacts. It was occupied intermittently from 500,000 to around 40,000 years ago.

"Researchers examined artifacts previously excavated from the site, which are mostly flint tools for cutting and scraping, and flint debris created in their manufacture," Sciencemag wrote.

An examination of approximately 100 layers of sediments in the depths of the cave deposits showed that none of the flints were burned from a period of approximately 350,000 years ago. Layers above that exposed many flints with red or black colors or cracking that showed they had been exposed to fire.

The researchers wrote in the Journal of Human Evolution that since wildfires were rare in cases, they were controlled by those who lit them.

There are indications from other sites that humans used fire before then but there is no conclusive evidence that they were  able to master its use.

Debates still rage among experts whether the use of fire actually began up to 2 million years ago or only more recently.

Harvard University's Richard Wrangham said the Tabun caves study was "exciting" but not enough to convince him.

He agrees with Prof. Shimelmitz agree that whenever fire began, it changed the lives of humans by allowing them to cook and keep warm.

"There's a reason people think we got fire from the gods," Shimelmitz added.

Obama Switching to Judaism

In an effort to overcome the continuing criticism that he is unsupportive and, in fact, dismissive of Israel, today President Obama announced that he is converting to Judaism in the hope that this will demonstrate his affinity to and empathy with the Israeli people.

Authorities have been unable to handle the millions of applicants who have volunteered to perform the circumcision.

Quite a collection

All of these phrases we've grown up with ...
all in one collection!

We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.
If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?
Then one may be that, and there would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!
Let's face it - English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger;
Neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
English muffins weren't invented in England.
We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes,
We find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square,
And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write, but fingers don't fing,
Grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?
Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend?
If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them,
What do you call it?
If teachers taught, why don't preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?
Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English
Should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.
In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?
We ship by truck but send cargo by ship...
We have noses that run and feet that smell.
We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway.
And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same,
While a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?
You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language
In which your house can burn up as it burns down,
In which you fill in a form by filling it out,
And in which an alarm goes off by going on.
And in closing..........

If Father is Pop, how come Mother's not Mop.??
