They are an expression of the desperate attempt to fill the holes in our souls, to provide the two most essential human needs: for love and meaning. 1) Loving intimacy. If there is no trustworthy other to love, the longing is misdirected into "intimacy" with some addictive substance. 2) Meaning: The fear of annihilation haunts us from the moment we become aware of how vulnerable and fragile we are. And if we forget for a few minutes, some terror attack or critical relative is sure to remind us. Without a relationship with a Higher Power, we feel totally insignificant, powerless and alone. Without G-d, we cannot bear our existential nothingness. Instead, we try to escape from the meaningless of our existence with addictions which provide an illusion of power and self-importance.
