A father transmits to his son beauty, strength, wealth, wisdom, and longevity (Eidiyos 2:9).

While some character traits, or at least tendencies to certain traits, appear to have a genetic factor, the lion's share of attitudes are learned. Undoubtedly the most significant influence on a child is his parents' attitudes, rather than their genetic composition.

One psychologist said, "If you have given your child self-confidence, you have given him everything. If you have not given your child self-confidence, then regardless of whatever else you have given, you have given nothing."

The crucial question is: What should parents do to help their child develop self-confidence? While many fine books suggest techniques to avoid common practices that depress a child's self-esteem, one factor overrides all else: self-esteem is contagious. Parents who feel secure about themselves will convey an attitude of security and self-confidence to their children. Parents who are insecure and anxiety-ridden are not likely to foster self-confidence in their children, regardless of how many books on parenting they may have absorbed.

As with so much else, the place to begin is with ourselves. By far the most effective way to instill a positive sense of self-awareness in our children is by developing our own self-awareness which will both lead to the discovery of our strengths and skills, and will reveal existing deficits that may then be corrected. Not only will the parents then transmit their self-esteem, the children may also benefit by observing the methods that their parents use to achieve positive feelings about themselves.

Today I shall ...
...

try to enhance my self-esteem and overcome my anxieties and insecurities.

Left-Wing Jews: A Jewish And American Tragedy By Dennis Prager - 1 Kislev 5779 – November 9, 2018

It is probably impossible to overstate the damage left-wing – not liberal but left-wing – Jews are doing to Judaism, Jews, and America.

Of course, the same can be said of the damage left-wing Catholics are doing to Catholicism and America, other left-wing Christians are doing to Christianity and America, and, most obviously, the damage the secular left-wing is doing. But since anti-Semitism is in the news, and given the prominence of many left-wing Jews, I will focus on them.

The damage done to Jews by left-wing Jews is not new. It began at the beginning of the left with Karl Marx, the grandson of two Orthodox rabbis. He wrote one of the most anti-Semitic tracts of the 19th century, "On the Jewish Question," published in 1844. In it he wrote, among other things:

"What is the worldly religion of the Jew? Huckstering…"

"What is his worldly God? Money…"

"Money is the jealous god of Israel, in face of which no other god may exist…"

"In the final analysis, the emancipation of the Jews is the emancipation of mankind from Judaism."

In the early 20th century, another left-wing Jew, Leon Trotsky, who, along with Lenin, led the Bolshevik Party in Russia, was a catastrophe for Jews and for humanity. In 1920, when Trotsky was head of the Red Army, Moscow's chief rabbi, Rabbi Jacob Mazeh, asked him to use the army to protect the Jews from pogromist attacks in which tens thousands of Jews were murdered. Trotsky is reported to have responded: "Why do you come to me? I am not a Jew," to which Rabbi Mazeh answered: "That's the tragedy. It's the Trotskys who make revolutions, and it's the Bronsteins who pay the price."

That is the story of the many Jewish leftists to this day: Jewish leftists make revolutions, and all the Jews (among millions of others) pay the price.

Thus, many of the leaders of the movement to economically strangle Israel – the Boycott, Divest, Sanctions (BDS) movement – are left-wing Jews.

A few years ago, I was invited to the world's most famous debating forum, the Oxford Union, to debate the farcical question of whether Israel or Hamas is a greater obstacle to peace in the Middle East. One of my two adversaries was a Jewish former professor at Oxford. He argued that Israel was a greater threat to peace than Hamas.

Another prominent left-wing Jew, MIT professor Noam Chomsky, has devoted his life to writing and speaking against two countries: the United States and Israel.

The security of the world's only Jewish state is by far the greatest security issue for world Jewry. Yet many left-wing Jews attack Israel, support many of those who wish to destroy Israel, or, at the very least, do nothing to strengthen Israel's security.

In America today, leftism has poisoned so many non-Orthodox synagogues, they differ only from the American Civil Liberties Union or the Democratic Party in their use of Hebrew liturgy.

Many non-Orthodox synagogues sat shiva when Donald Trump was elected president. This perversion of Judaism is an example of what leftism does to every religion it infiltrates. I suspect none of those synagogues sat shiva after the murder of 11 Jews in Pittsburgh. Why? Did the election of Donald Trump bother them more?

Left-wing Jews are ethnically Jewish, but their values derive from leftism (just as the current pope is Catholic in his identity but his values derive from leftism).

The current charge that the Pittsburgh massacre was caused by President Trump is one of the greatest libels in American history. Virtually every left-wing columnist and commentator has spread this lie, many of them left-wing Jews such as the Washington Post's Dana Milbank. One of their lies is that attacks on George Soros are anti-Semitic.

I think George Soros is a malevolent force. Am I an anti-Semite? (To answer that, let's compare what I have done for Jews and Judaism with what any of these left-wing Jews have done.)

But left-wing Jews have always done this. They attributed the execution of the Rosenbergs – who, immoral leftists that they were, passed on the secrets to the atom bomb to Stalin – to anti-Semitism. The judge in the Rosenberg case was a Jew. But to left-wing Jews, that didn't matter. Ever since Stalin labeled Trotsky a "fascist," leftists have always depicted their opponents as "Nazis," "racists," "anti-Semites," "fascists," "haters," and "bigots." That is their modus operandi.

Many of these left-wing Jews base this libel about President Trump's "role" in the context of an equally libelous claim that there has been a great rise in American anti-Semitism in the Trump era – resulting in the Pittsburgh massacre – based on an Anti-Defamation League study. The study's mendacity is fully exposed by David E. Bernstein, a professor of law at George Mason University Law School and a Trump opponent, in two devastating reviews (one on Reason.com and one in Tablet Magazine).

Read them and you will understand one of the most important things you need to know about the left: Truth is not a left-wing value. The ADL, which at one time was preoccupied with fighting anti-Semitism, is now preoccupied with fighting Donald Trump and fighting on behalf of the American left.

In 1970, a Harris study showed that 23 percent of Jewish college students termed themselves "far left" versus 4 percent of Protestants and 2 percent of Catholics.

Many of those college students are now many of the non-Orthodox rabbis and lay leaders in American Jewish life. Given the rule that whatever the left touches it ultimately ruins (the universities, for example), the Bronsteins will continue to pay the price for the Trotskys' revolutions.

Liberal Jews are destroying their own religion

By Jonathan Neumann

June 23, 2018 | 9:33am

American Judaism is broken.

When two of the Jewish community's most celebrated writers, Michael Chabon and his wife Ayelet Waldman, write an open letter stating that: "Any Jew, anywhere, who does not act to oppose President Donald Trump and his administration acts in favor of anti-Semitism; any Jew who does not condemn the president, directly and by name, for his racism, white supremacism, intolerance and Jew hatred, condones all of those things," you don't have to look far to see why.

American Judaism is broken because the Jewish left broke it.

A tiresome fixation on "tikkun olam," which literally means "repair of the world," has allowed Judaism to fall into disrepair.

The phrase "tikkun olam" was quietly lifted out of context from a Jewish prayer before the Second World War to mean social justice. It was popularized in the 1970s and 1980s by radicals like Michael Lerner, who founded the extreme left-wing magazine, Tikkun.

Since then, we have been led to believe that the purpose of the Jews in the world is to campaign for higher taxes, sexual permissiveness, reduced military spending, illegal immigration, opposition to fracking, the banishment of religion from the public square and every other liberal cause under the sun — all in the name of God.

But the truth is that tikkun olam and its leftist politics have no basis in Judaism. Tikkun olam is not Judaism at all but a distinct religion, whose adherents, it might be said, have culturally appropriated this ancient faith. This religion of tikkun olam commands the allegiance of most non-Orthodox Jews (and some Orthodox ones), who make up the overwhelming majority of the American Jewish community. The dogma of this religion is appealingly simple: Judaism is tikkun olam, which is social justice, which is liberalism. The Jews are called upon to do no less — and no more — than cultivate a liberal paradise in America.

In this, liberal Jews have often had the hypocritical backing of the celebrity corps — literati, Hollywood executives, academics, politicians and financiers — who say one thing in public while, in several cases, doing unspeakable things in private.

But above all, this liberalism — this tikkun olam — teaches that the Jewish People is an outdated and chauvinistic relic, with no need for a nation-state of its own in its ancient homeland. Consequently, Jewish social justice activists help to defame Israel and weaken America's bond with the Jewish State.

Jewish social justice activists help to defame Israel and weaken America's bond with the Jewish State

This dangerous ideology culminated in the election and administration of Barack Obama, who was hailed as the "tikkun olam president" and (synonymously) as the "first Jewish president." He repeatedly referenced the significance of tikkun olam to his own life, nurtured by his liberal Jewish mentors in Chicago, and it was because of this commitment to tikkun olam, not in spite of it, that he was the most hostile president toward Israel in history.

But now the tikkun olam movement is in disarray. Its activists have been evicted from the White House, together with their messiah, replaced by a coalition of religious Christians and traditionalist Jews. And natural as it comes to the political exiles to oppose the new administration, these activists are discovering that left-wing social justice marches have no place for Jewish warriors.

And so the Jews have to choose between social justice and being Jewish. Chabon and Waldman have made their choice.

But there is an alternative.

A new generation of traditionalist Jews, proud of their heritage and jealous to preserve it, is unimpressed with America's broken Judaism. These Jews know that their ancestors did not live to worship a political party nor die for faddish causes.

They recognize that the American Jewish future depends on overcoming the superficial and ignorant equation of Judaism with leftist politics. What is needed is a real Jewish renewal — a community that stands for religious liberty, not against it; affirms the alliance between America and Israel, rather than undermines it; and above all believes it is a community that has a compelling reason to persist.

It's time American Jewry repaired itself instead of the world.

15 Sivan

This is the traditional date of the birth and the death of Judah (1564-1445 BCE), the fourth son of Jacob and Leah. Judah means "to admit" -- as to admit a mistake, or to acknowledge in gratitude -- and is the source of the English word, Jew. When Joseph was thrown into the pit, it was Judah who saved Joseph's life by suggesting his sale to a passing caravan. As atonement for not rescuing Joseph completely, Judah later offered his own life in place of Benjamin. At the end of Jacob's life, Judah was given the blessing of kingship, and indeed King David, King Solomon, and the future Messiah all descend from the tribe of Judah.

The Rubashkin Saga (Part XIX) By Rabbi Hanoch Teller - 30 Heshvan 5779 – November 8, 2018

Nathan Lewin was called in to argue the case before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Prior to the appeal, the lawyers had received notice of who the judges would be for the next two weeks on the Court of Appeals. It's customary for Courts of Appeals to occasionally invite district judges to sit as visiting jurists for a day, enabling the judges of the appeals courts to become acquainted with district judges and their abilities. It also gives district judges an opportunity to see in-person how the appeals process works. A district judge who sits with an appellate judge has the same authority as the judge whose place he or she is temporarily filling. The district judge can vote and write opinions.

The benefits of this system seem simple enough, but something happened in that particular court on that day that would make any objective-minded person cry foul. The Eighth Circuit invited Judge Reade to sit with two of the three judges – on the preceding as well as the very day that the case concerning Judge Reade's qualification and fairness would be heard! It is almost too incredible to imagine, but right up to the Rubashkin appeal at 2 p.m., Judge Reade sat with two of the three judges!

Could this be a coincidence? Could John Wilkes Booth have been aiming for a different victim? Does it not make sense that this invitation was engineered to enable these two judges to get to know Reade, and take her at her word that she had done nothing improper by being involved in the Rubashkin case prior to the raid, and that her prior involvement had in no way biased her against the defendant whose apprehension she had orchestrated?

But what was the Rubashkin defense team to do? If they were to challenge the suspiciousness of this invitation by requesting that the two judges be disqualified, that would be a discomforting challenge to the judges' integrity (read: insult). If the Court of Appeals would subsequently affirm the conviction, the lawyers would be blamed for having gratuitously insulted and alienated the judges. Furthermore, the defense team believed that their appeal was so strong that they did not have to be overly concerned about this indelicate quagmire. After deliberation, the legal team decided not to file a motion, instead trusting – uneasily and (ultimately) naively – the Court.

The appeal argued that Reade and the prosecutors had had an obligation to tell Rubashkin's lawyers about the judge's involvement in planning the immigration raid. Except in very limited circumstances, judges aren't allowed to meet with one side in a case without the other, and so those weekly meetings had violated the rules. Several friend-of-the-court amicus briefs had been written in support of Rubashkin's position, filed by the ACLU and other similar organizations, and signed by 86 former federal judges and other Justice Department officials.

Reade and the government claimed that she had attended all those meetings simply to save her court a headache; her support for the raid only concerned logistics. But as Emily Bazelon noted in Slate magazine, judges aren't just supposed to be impartial, they're supposed to make sure they don't create the appearance of bias.

It is elementary that judges who meet regularly with prosecutors regarding a mountain of indictments should not preside over those very same cases. Bazelon noted, "Rubashkin's prosecution was the culmination of the raid, in a sense. Getting him was the best way to justify the spectacle of the processing of the sad sack Guatemalans on the cattle fairground…. We know from Reade's comments to the New York Timesthat she felt she had to defend." There is doubt that Judge Reade was on the defensive since the raid and the court case were widely condemned.

There is an elaborate legal system that enables judges to police the implementation of the law, but hardly as many safeguards regarding the scrutiny of the judges. And thus, even though the oddities of this case don't sit well, there is not much that can be done to force the recusal of an obstinate federal judge.

Nathan Lewin argued the appeal before the Eighth Circuit. For every issue that the Chief Judge raised, not only did Lewin have an answer, but he was able to cite an opinion that the Chief Judge had personally written which corroborated the issue on appeal. This might have been Lewin's finest hour, and despite the football phenomenon of "Any Given Sunday," he walked out of court confident that Shalom Rubashkin would soon see the light of day. But for some reason already intimated, the Appeals Court affirmed the decision of the District Court.
