The Portion of Vayeitzai A Promise for Generation Following the taking of the blessing from Esau, Isaac blesses Jacob and forbids him from marrying one of the local women from the tribe of Chet. He commands him to go to Padan Aram, to the home of Betuel, Rebecca's father, and to marry a woman from his family. Jacob leaves Be'er Sheva on his way to Charan. The sun sets midway, Jacob lies down to sleep and he dreams. G-d reveals Himself to Jacob in a dream and promises that "I will be with you and protect you along the way…for I will not leave you…" (Genesis 28;15). G-d's promise is not only a personal pledge to Jacob but is rather a guarantee to all of his descendants throughout the generations. The letter "ayin" in the word "e-ezavcha" (I will leave you) is written in such a way that it can be read in the opposite manner. The numerical value of the letter "ayin" is seventy, alluding to the return of Jacob's desendants to Eretz Yisrael following the seventy years of the Babylonian exile and from the seventy natio0ns to which they were exiled.
