Shabbos Rest Helps Your Whole Week

On hump day (today Wednesday) it is good to remember that The rest we have on Shabbos is not merely rest from work on that day alone. Rather, it has the ability to give us peace of mind all the days of the week.

See if this doesn't choke you up.  Our country will never be lke this again.

Great video of a Spontaneous Victory Parade in Honolulu    in1945.
Take a look at this video-absolutely fabulous! Notice the cars and jeeps, youth.
The guys in khaki or gray shirts and black ties are Navy officers or chiefs. The rest are Army or Marine. How young they all were to do what they did.
This guy really captured a moment in history! (You can listen to Jimmy Durante singing   "I'll be Seeing You" in the background, too)
This is a super video of a time past - we need to remember and be THANKFUL.
Check out the color fidelity. It's not bad for 1945. Nothing will ever compare with Kodachrome film.

This should have gone out in March, but I missed it. Too good to wait until next year

GOOD MORNING! Purim came up - Wednesday night, March 7th, through all day Thursday. Purim is the holiday that reminds us that God runs the world behind the scenes. (Coincidence is just God's way of staying anonymous!) Nowhere in the Megillas Esther is the name of God mentioned, though there is a tradition that every time the words "the King" are used it also refers to the Almighty.

The Book of  Esther is a book full of suspense and intrigue with a very satisfying ending -- the Jewish people are saved from destruction!

Purim is preceded by the Fast of Esther -- from dawn until after the Megilla is read. Named in her honor, it is in memory of the Jew's fast before going to battle the anti-Semites in the Purim story. This year we fasted on Wednesday Day.

Purim comes from the word "pur" in Persian which means "lots" -- as in, "Haman cast lots for the most 'auspicious' date to kill the Jews." The date fell on the 13th of Adar. The events of that date were turned around from a day of destruction to a day of victory and joy. We celebrate Purim on the 14th of Adar for "they gained relief on the fourteenth, which they made a day of feasting and gladness" (Megillas Esther 9:17).

In very few places -- most notably in Jerusalem -- Purim is celebrated the following day, the 15th day of Adar. The Sages declared that all cities which were walled cities at the time of Joshua should celebrate Purim the following day. This is to commemorate the extra day which King Ahashverosh granted Esther to allow the Jews of Shushan (the capital of Persia, which was a walled city) to deal with their enemies. In Shushan they gained relief on the fifteenth. The holiday celebrated on the 15th of Adar is called Shushan Purim.

There are two ways in which to try to destroy the Jewish people -- physically and spiritually. Our enemies have attempted both. Chanukah is the celebration over those who have tried and failed to culturally assimilate us (the Greeks and Western Culture); Purim is the celebration over those who have tried and failed to physically destroy us (from the Amalekites to the Persians, ad nauseam).

Why do we masquerade with costumes and masks on Purim? As mentioned above, nowhere in the Megillas Esther does God's name appear. If one so desires, he can see the whole Purim story as a chain of coincidences totally devoid of Divine Providence. Just as we hide behind masks, but our essence is still there, so too God has "hidden His face" behind the forces of history, but is still there guiding history.

Why do we make noise every time Haman's name is mentioned in the Megillah? The answer: By blotting out Haman's name we are symbolically obliterating evil.

The holiday is celebrated by hearing the Megillah Wednesday night and Thursday morning. During the day only, we fulfill three mitzvot: 1) Matanot L'evyonim -- giving gifts or money to at least two poor people. ( 2) Mishloach Manot, the "sending of portions," giving at least two ready-to-eat foods to a minimum of one person. ) Seudah, a festive meal. During the meal we are commanded to drink wine until we don't know the difference between "Blessed is Mordechai" and "Cursed is Haman." (It is best fulfilled by drinking a little and taking a nap -- one doesn't know the difference between them while sleeping!) One should NOT drink to excess. The mitzva is about connecting to the Almighty -- and sloppy drunks are lousy at spirituality. Drinking can be dangerous. The mitzva is only at the meal with wine and should be well-controlled and minimized.

Why are we instructed to drink this amount? In a certain sense, Purim is greater than Yom Kippur. On Yom Kippur we fast and it is easy for our soul to have dominance over the body. Purim is the epitome of integrating the physical and the spiritual towards realizing that the Almighty loves us. The only thing that stands between you and the Almighty -- is you. The wine and the spirit of the day help us get beyond the barrier -- to realize that everything comes from the Almighty for our good! We may perceive things that happen to us as "bad" though ultimately they benefit us either physically and/or spiritually.

The mitzvot of Mishloach Manot and giving gifts to the poor were prescribed to generate brotherly love between all Jews. When there is love and unity amongst us, our enemies cannot harm us!

Paths of Life. and you

  Give People What They Want

Every person in the world waits for signs of recognition and affection.

Students wait for signs of friendliness from their teacher; teachers await signs of respect from students. Children want signs of empathy from their parents; parents hunger for affection from their children. Your spouse wants to be connected to you. A customer wants his needs to be understood; a salesperson needs to feel that his merchandise is appreciated. Your tax man loves to know you care.

So give people what they want!

Recycled bumper cars and old man flying

This was Sunday April 15th blog that did not make it

Give Your Spouse Positive Reinforcement

I once saw this advertisement: "Make sure you're part of a winning team." The way to be part of a winning team in marriage is to bring out the best in your spouse.

Remember to keep your focus on your spouse's strengths and not his or her weaknesses. Remember to believe in the potential of your spouse. Believe that your spouse has untapped wisdom and goodness that both of you can reach.

Remember to notice positive changes and to express your appreciation. Express appreciation and gratitude for positive words and actions, even if they are not totally what you would have wanted. By giving positive reinforcement to a movement in the right direction, you encourage your spouse to keep moving along the best path for both of you.

This flight occurred at Guano Point on the Havasupai Indian Reservation.  It isn't far from the cantilevered glass walk over the Grand Canyon.
(Had to be on an Indian Reservation because the Feds probably would have shot him down!)

Jet flight through the Grand Canyon!  Awesome sight...This was filmed in May, 2011.

THESE ARE
Remember driving the bumper cars at amusement parks or A fair, don't you?  They were so much fun.... Well, now what do you do with old Bumper Cars?

(and check out the license plates!)

WHO  KNEW?

Yes, you read that right; these little beasties are street legal.

They  run on  either Kawasaki or Honda motorcycle  engines and co-opt vintage  bumper car  bodies
into the most awesome form of mini-car  we've seen in too long.  There are seven of  these little
monsters floating around California and they're all the creation of one man, Tom Wright, a builder
in the outskirts of San Diego who figured the leftovers of the Long Beach Pike amusement park
needed a more dignified end than the trash  heap.

They  were originally powered by two cylinder Harley Davidson
Motorcycle engines but they rattled like heck because of the two cylinder
Vibration and Tom replaces them with four cylinder Honda or Kawasaki 750's
And a couple have been measured as capable of 160  MPH, which is terrifyingly fast in machines
with such a short wheelbase.

By the way, they are almost  indestructible in  accidents!

Absolutely Fascinating Part of History! and don't belittle pain

The Broken Arm:
In a moment your life can change.

In walking home from prayer yesterday, on my path that I have walked hundreds of time before, I suddenly subconsciously decided to see who was tougher? Me or the concrete sidewalk?  The sidewalk won. I broke my elbow in five places and after surgery on Thursday April the 19th (two days before my Hebrew birthday on the Hebrew month of Nisson the 29th), I will become the new bionic man with a plate, pins and screws in my elbow which I will carry to my grave (unless I take them out).

I have written on this principal before, that in a second your life can change for the better or worse. Constant prayer and attention to details, helps make these dramas and traumas come less often, but into every life they will come.

Don't Belittle Pain

When someone tells you about his suffering, never say things like, "Cheer up." "It's not so bad." Or, "That wouldn't bother me." Saying these will only cause him extra pain.

Tinian  Island , Pacific Ocean.

It's a small island, less than 40 square miles, a flat green
Dot in the vastness of Pacific blue.

Fly over it and you notice a slash across its north end of
uninhabited bush, a long thin line that looks like an overgrown dirt runway.  If you didn't know what it was, you wouldn't give it a second glance out your airplane window.

On the ground, you see the runway isn't dirt but tarmac and crushed limestone, abandoned with weeds sticking out of it.  Yet this is arguably the most historical airstrip on earth.  This is where World War II was won.  This is Runway Able:

On July 24, 1944, 30,000 US Marines landed on the beaches of Tinian ....  Eight days later, over 8,000 of the 8,800 Japanese soldiers on the island were dead (vs. 328 Marines), and four months later the Seabees had built the busiest airfield of WWII - dubbed North Field -  enabling B-29 Super fortresses to launch air attacks on the Philippines, Okinawa, and mainland Japan.

Late in the afternoon of August 5, 1945, a B-29 was maneuvered over a bomb loading pit, then after lengthy preparations, taxied to the east end of North Field's main runway, Runway Able, and at 2:45 am in the early morning darkness of August 6, took off.

The B-29 was piloted by Col. Paul Tibbets of the US Army Air Force, who had named the plane after his mother, Enola Gay.  The crew named the bomb they were carrying Little Boy.  6 hours later at 8:15 am Japan time, the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima .

Three days later, in the pre-dawn hours of August 9, a B-29 namedBockscar (a pun on "boxcar" after its flight commander Capt. Fred Bock), piloted by Major Charles Sweeney took off from Runway Able.  Finding its primary target of Kokura obscured by clouds, Sweeney proceeded to the secondary target of Nagasaki , over which, at 11:01 am, bombardier Kermit Beahan released the atomic bomb dubbed Fat Man.

Here is "Atomic Bomb Pit #1" where Little Boy was loaded onto Enola Gay:

There are pictures displayed in the pit, now glass-enclosed.  This one shows Little Boy being hoisted into Enola Gay's bomb bay.

And here on the other side of ramp is "Atomic Bomb Pit #2" where Fat Man was loaded onto Bockscar.

The commemorative plaque records that 16 hours after the nuking of Nagasaki , "On August 10, 1945 at 0300, the Japanese Emperor without his cabinet's consent decided to end the Pacific War."

Take a good look at these pictures, folks.  This is where World War II ended with total victory of America over Japan . I was there all alone.  There were no other visitors and no one lives
anywhere near for miles.  Visiting the Bomb Pits, walking along deserted Runway Able in solitude, was a moment of extraordinarily powerful solemnity.

It was a moment of deep reflection.  Most people, when they think of Hiroshima and Nagasaki , reflect on the numbers of lives killed in the nuclear blasts - at least 70,000 and 50,000 respectively. Being here caused me to reflect on the number of lives saved - how many more Japanese and Americans would have died in a continuation of the war had the nukes not been dropped.

Yet that was not all.  It's not just that the nukes obviated the US invasion of Japan , Operation Downfall, that would have caused upwards of a million American and Japanese deaths or more.  It's thatnuking   Hiroshima and Nagasaki were of extraordinary humanitarian benefit to the nation and people of  Japan  .

Let's go to this cliff on the nearby island of Saipan to learn why:

Saipan is less than a mile north of Tinian ....  The month before the Marines took Tinian, on June 15, 1944, 71,000 Marines landed on Saipan ....  They faced 31,000 Japanese soldiers determined not to surrender.

Japan had colonized Saipan after World War I and turned the island into a giant sugar cane plantation.  By the time of the Marine invasion, in addition to the 31,000 entrenched soldiers, some 25,000 Japanese settlers were living on Saipan, plus thousands more Okinawans, Koreans, and native islanders brutalized as slaves to cut the sugar cane.

There were also one or two thousand Korean "comfort women" (kanjiin Japanese), abducted young women from Japan 's colony of Korea to service the Japanese soldiers as sex slaves.  (See The Comfort Women: Japan 's Brutal Regime of Enforced Prostitution in the Second World War, by George Hicks.)

Within a week of their landing, the Marines set up a civilian prisoner encampment that quickly attracted a couple  of thousand Japanese and others wanting US food and protection.  When word of this reached Emperor Hirohito - who contrary to the myth was in full charge of the war - he became alarmed that radio interviews of the well-treated prisoners broadcast to Japan would subvert his people's will to fight.

As meticulously documented by historian Herbert Bix in Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan, the Emperor issued an order for all Japanese civilians on Saipan to commit suicide.  The order included the promise that, although the civilians were of low caste, their suicide would grant them a status in heaven equal to those honored soldiers who died in combat for their Emperor.

And that is why the precipice in the picture above is known as Suicide Cliff, off which over 20,000 Japanese civilians jumped to their deaths to comply with their fascist emperor's desire - mothers flinging their babies off the cliff first or in their arms as they jumped.

Anyone reluctant or refused, such as the Okinawan or Korean slaves, were shoved off at gunpoint by the Jap soldiers.  Then the soldiers themselves proceeded to hurl themselves into the ocean to drown off a sea cliff afterwards called Banzai Cliff.  Of the 31,000 Japanese soldiers on Saipan , the Marines killed 25,000, 5,000 jumped off Banzai Cliff, and only the remaining thousand were taken prisoner.

The extent of this demented fanaticism is very hard for any civilized mind to fathom - especially when it is devoted not to anything noble but barbarian evil instead.  The vast brutalities inflicted by the Japanese on their conquered and colonized peoples of China , Korea , the Philippines , and throughout their "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" was a hideously depraved horror.

And they were willing to fight to the death to defend it.  So they had to be nuked.  The only way to put an end to the Japanese barbarian horror was unimaginably colossal destruction against which they had no defense whatever. Nuking Japan was not a matter of justice, revenge, or it getting what it deserved.  It was the only way to end the Japanese dementia.

And it worked - for the Japanese.  They stopped being barbarians and started being civilized.  They achieved more prosperity - and peace - than they ever knew, or could have achieved had they continued fighting and not been nuked.  The shock of getting nuked is responsible.

We achieved this because we were determined to achieve victory.  Victory without apologies.  Despite perennial liberal demands we do so, America and its government has never apologized for nuking Japan ...  Hopefully, America never will.

Oh, yes... Guinness lists Saipan as having the best, most equitable, weather in the world.  And the beaches?  Well, take a look:

Although we do not forget, history fades into the shadows of our mind and we seldom think about it.  But, we should remember and we should be constantly reminded of our history, where we came from and how we got here.  Kind of interesting don't you think?

Let my people go and Pope Benedict XVI in Israel in 2009 and Internet tells you what to watch

Write Notes of Praise and Admiration

Written positive feedback notes are more effective than verbal statements. When someone speaks or acts in especially positive ways, write short notes to that person expressing your admiration for what he said or did. This is especially valuable for parents, teachers, spouses, and mentors to do.

People have saved self-image building notes for ten, twenty, and thirty years. Imagine how you would feel if you knew that an image-building note you sent would be a cherished memento even thirty years later. At the very least you will bring a smile to someone's face.

Today we have come to bid you Shalom and farewell.
We were delighted with your decision to come to the Holy Land. Your journey to the Holy Land was a heartfelt example of the exercise of spiritual values. It constituted a significant contribution to the new relations between the Vatican and Jerusalem. It was a profound demonstration of the enduring dialogue between the Jewish people and the hundreds of millions of Christian believers throughout the world.

Canadian hi def scenery--REMARKABLE and Amazon Waterfalls and Passover Robots at the Seder

Do Things Daily That Are Difficult For You To Do

Each and every day, say or do at least one thing that you find difficult to say or do.

Every time you say something that is difficult for you to say, you build up your self-image: "I am a person who can speak up and say things even thought I find them difficult to say."

Every time you do something difficult, you build up your self-image: "I am a person who can do things even though they are difficult for me to do."

This is a highly empowering self-image booster. This way you will keep saying and doing things that you need to say and do, and you won't be stopped by the thoughts of, "I find it difficult to say or do, so I won't say or do it."

A Passover Anecdote by George Burns

During one of his many trips to London, George Burns became friends with a very wealthy, yet very modest, Jewish chap named Hyman Goldfarb.

On one visit, Hy told Burns that because of his large donations to charities through the years, the queen wanted to knight him, but he was going to turn it down.

"That's a great honor," Burns said. "Why would you turn it down?"

"Because during the ceremony you have to say something in Latin," he said. "And I don't wish to bother studying Latin just for that."

"So say something in Hebrew. The queen wouldn't know the difference."

"Brilliant," Hy complimented me, "but what should I say?"

"Remember that question the son asks the father on the first night of Passover? ... Can you say that in Hebrew?"

"Of course," he said. "Ma nishtana ha leila hazeh. (Hebrew for the four questions)
Thank you, old sport, I shall become a knight."

At the ceremony Hy waited his turn while several of the other honorees went before the queen. Finally they called his name.  He knelt before Her Majesty, she placed her sword on one shoulder and then on the other, and motioned for Hy to speak.

Out came "Ma nishtana ha leila hazeh."

The queen turned to her adviser and whispered,

"Why is this knight different from all other knights?"

Happy Passover
