Yehuda Lave, Spiritual Advisor and Counselor Imagine what a wonderful world it would be if, instead of news reports of threats and disasters, we would hear stories about chesed (acts of kindness) and self-discipline, as in, "X got out of bed eleven times at night to care for a sick child! Her husband helped tidy up and smiled instead of criticizing the mess. She didn't hit the kids even though they were being really obnoxious! The children said their brachos (blessings) with enthusiasm and insisted on a healthy breakfast instead of eating junk foods!" We can create this delightful world in our minds by cherishing our smallest victories. Doing so brings true spiritual excitement into our lives, sweetens the most painful difficulties in our lives and builds a strong sense of self-worth and emunah (faith) which is not dependent on grades, looks or external circumstances. From Elena Kuchik: this is from my own observations..lol (LOTS OF LOVE): YOU KNOW YOU LIVE IN ISRAEL IF... 1. your pen unrolls to Birkat Hamazon (prayer after meal) 2. every door has a mezuzah 3. every office and house has book of tehillim (psalms) 4.(almost) everything is kosher (at least in tzefat, thank you, rabbi Bistritzki!!) 3. you eat tehina at least once a day.(or at least halva) 4. you have constant feeling of "what did i do to deserve this..i feel like i won billion dollars...definitely its just hashem's free gift" 5. you drink water on hot day outside and say blessing (relatively ) loud and a passer by without kipa answers (really) loud "amen!" 6. sometimes you feel like you want to give a hug to every single person on the street (especially if you live in tzefat)..and sometimes you do (the people you are allowed to hug by Torah law haha) 7. not 1 second is passing without doing a mitzvah..even when you sleep (at least mitzvah of living in eretz isroel) 8. you go home at night from bookstore after dark through kevorim (tzefat holy cemetery); praying at Chana and 7 sons and feel the most safe and protected and DEFINITELY not creepy 9.every shabbat before you leave shul after shaharit you pray a minute in the holy room where arizal learned with eliyahu hanavi (only if you live in tzefat..but other places have their own special benefits) 10. you write the 9 above statements hoping that people in chutz laaretz(outside of Eretz Isroel) will really feel how special it is to live in OUR LAND and just come here!!! Esau came from the field, saw the soup and said: "... please, pour for me from this red thing" (Genesis 25:30). Later in the Torah portion (27:22) the commentator, Rashi, mentions that Jacob always spoke politely and used the word "please." Esau, however, always spoke in a rough manner to his father. What can we learn from the fact that he was polite in this conversation? Even though Esau excelled in honoring his father by taking care of his physical needs, he still spoke to him in an insolent and arrogant manner. We see here that when Esau had a desire for food, he spoke in a respectful manner and used the term na, "please". This is the manner of people with faulty traits. Even though they constantly talk with chutzpah, when it comes to manipulating someone to fulfill their desire, they speak softly and humbly. There are people who speak politely to their preferred customers in business, but fail to speak respectfully to their family and other people. Be aware of how politely and respectfully you speak to someone when you are trying to influence him to help you obtain things you want. Then try to make that manner of speaking habitual! Is there any value to their good heart when they do not observe the Torah and Mitzvot?   Answer: The root of this question lies in the fact that as we know, we are commanded to fulfill many Mitzvot, both positive and negative, by the Torah and from the words of our Sages. There are those individuals whose heart sways them to perform good deeds but they are not doing so because the Torah commands us to act in a decent and upstanding manner; rather, they do so because they personally see fit to act kindly and with honesty and integrity. The question is: Do they receive reward for such behavior or not.   The great Rambam (Chapter 8 of Hilchot Melachim) writes that non-Jews must observe the Seven Noachide Laws that all non-Jews are obligated to keep by Torah law. He concludes this law, as follows: "Any [non-Jew] who accepts the Seven Noachide Laws and is careful to observe them is considered a pious non-Jew and has a share in the World to Come. Nevertheless, this only applies when one accepts and observes these commandments because Hashem commanded them to do so in His Torah. However, if one performs them because of one's individual understanding, such an individual is not considered a 'permanent resident' and is not considered a pious non-Jew."   It seems from the words of the Rambam that good deeds performed by an individual have no value when they are not being done as a direct result of Hashem's divine command.   This is especially noteworthy when we find great nations of the world who have followed etiquette and codes of conduct accepted by society and not necessarily by those divine codes of conduct prescribed by Hashem in his holy Torah and then such cultured and well-mannered nations become the most cruel and vicious among nations. For instance, after hundreds of years of notable culture, the Germans committed terrible atrocities to our nation for many years. Similarly, the French who, for centuries, were known for their etiquette and manners acted wickedly toward the Jewish nation when they chased them out of their homes several times and had them relocate to other places as well as massacring the Jewish nations throughout several blood libels. We find this among other nations as well in that sometimes, they act with kindness and justice based on understood social values, however, they eventually treat one another with great cruelty. On the other hand, the way of the Jewish nation is to behave according to the Torah's true rules of conduct at all times from which they cannot veer right or left and thus, they have always remained merciful people sons of merciful people.   Nevertheless, we must be cognizant of the fact that there are many people who are not meticulous with regards to Torah observance but have belief of Hashem in their heart and as a result, they try to behave with integrity since they realize that Hashem wishes that people act nicely and civilly, such people will certainly receive reward for this behavior. This is especially true regarding a multitude of Jews who did not merit receiving a Torah education but nevertheless try to live their lives as fine, upstanding people because they believe in the existence of Hashem who will certainly receive reward for their actions, as the verse states, "Do good, Hashem, to the good and to those straight of heart."   Furthermore, the Ramban (in his Sefer Sha'ar Ha'Gemul, page 290) writes that there are individuals who deny the existence of Hashem and yet they live long lives and enjoy their stay in this world. The Ramban asks: One who denies the existence of Hashem deserves no reward whatsoever! If so, why should such a person enjoy this world? The Ramban answers: "This is not a question, for the way of the Merciful One is to show mercy to one who does good and worthy deeds in this world, even if he has done so with an idolatrous intention. Blessed is the Righteous Judge who does everything in His mercy."   This means that Hashem's will for this world is that people treat each other nicely. Thus, if an individual treats people nicely and benefits others, Hashem will repay him for this deed although the individual is not doing so for the sake of Heaven.   Based on this, we understand that it is a sacred obligation for all of us, especially those who follow the Torah's path always, to be good and decent to others, for Hashem does not want people to treat one another wickedly. If we do so for the sake of Heaven while following the rule "Derech Eretz (fine character and manners) precedes the Torah" because this is the will of Hashem and then supplement such behavior with Torah, Mitzvot, and good deeds, this will certainly aid us in finding favor in the eyes of Hashem and mankind.   Etzel Museum and Tel Aviv oceanfront 82217 Why do women outlive men?, Hmmm... First, acknowledge the other person's pain. We cannot change others' behavior and can barely change our own, but we can acknowledge that it is painful for us not to get all we hoped for. The next step is to share your most minor "victories" in whatever realm you know the other person wants to see changes. This should be done not only to please the person, which is a wonderful goal, but also with the awareness that if Hashem put you in relationship with this person, then it will help you grow spiritually by putting effort into staying balanced. The official opening of the new high-speed train line is six months away, in April 2018, but a deliberately weighted-down train inaugurated the track, Channel 2 reported. The purpose of this first trip, with a freight train loaded up so that it weighed a total of 1,200 tons, was twofold: to test the bridges and rails, and to strengthen and stabilize the concrete and tracks. The train will continue to go back and forth between the two cities over the next few weeks. If all goes smoothly, the line will open for passengers in April. "This is a fast train which will take 28 minutes to get from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem," he said. "This will ensure Jerusalem's status and will give people the ability to live in it, to set up businesses and will completely change the connection between Jerusalem and the rest of the State of Israel." The Tel Aviv-Jerusalem rail project, which is projected to cost an estimated NIS 7 billion ($1.8 billion) and has been in the works since 2001, will cut travel time down significantly from the 78-minute ride on the old line built during the days of the Ottoman Empire. The trains will reach speeds of up to 160 kph (100 mph). When fully operational, they will depart every 15 minutes in each direction, carrying up to 1,000 passengers each. The massive public works project has faced many hurdles since planning started 15 years ago. Originally slated to be completed in 2008, environmental activists stalled the plans after raising a number of concerns about potential damage to the protected hills and valleys surrounding the capital. Environmental groups tried to force the planners to build a tunnel under the Yitlah Stream instead of passing over it with a bridge. The Interior Ministry's Planning Commission decided that the tunnel would hold up the project for at least two years, and ruled in favor of Israel Railways. The high-speed rail line also crosses the Green Line twice, once near Latrun and once near Mevasseret Zion, inviting criticism from the Israeli left and pro-Palestinian groups. A German company advising the project withdrew in the face of pressure from activists. The longest tunnel in the Fast Lane project is 11.6 km (7.2 miles) long, making it the longest tunnel in Israel. A massive German tunnel boring machine drilled each of the tunnels, specially customized to drill in one motion at the size of the tunnel. The machine used 24 motors to drill directly into the hard Jerusalem stone, advancing at a rate of 16 to 20 meters (50 to 65 feet) per day. In Mevasseret Zion, the train tracks are 200 meters (650 feet) below ground, as the suburb is perched on hilltops higher than the capital.
