It was a highlight to my experience in living in Israel and I put it on my blog each day to remember. The articles that I include each day are those that I find interesting, so I feel you will find them interesting as well. "His legacy will remain with us." By Aryeh Savir, TPS Israel's leadership eulogized Uri Zohar, a prominent movie star and filmmaker who later became a rabbi, after he passed away on Thursday at the age of 86. Zohar was one of Israel's most famous comedians, actor, director and one of the leading creators in the film industry in the country. He participated in the creation of a series of classics in which he starred. In the late 1970s, he became religious and an ultra-Orthodox rabbi, teacher and public figure. President Isaac Herzog said he was "sorry to hear about the passing of the man of culture and Torah, Rabbi Uri Zohar. A great creator, one of the designers of Israeli cinema, who made a significant contribution to the cultural and spiritual assets of the State of Israel will not be forgotten." Chief Rabbi of Israel David Lau said that "together with all the people of Israel, I mourn the departure from the world of my beloved friend, the righteous Rabbi Uri Zohar." "He was an exemplary figure in our generation, paved the way to the roots of the people and turned many away from iniquity. He was privileged to live a meaningful life of Torah, in modesty and humility, out of devotion to the Blessed Creator," Rabbi Lau added. "Rabbi Uri Zohar was one of the greatest creators in Israel and a cornerstone of Israeli culture," said Minister of Culture and Sports Hilli Tropper. "His legacy will remain with us." The Israel Artists' Association said that "it is difficult to imagine Israeli culture without the contribution and character of Zohar, a groundbreaking artist, one of a kind, who defined and was largely the voice of an entire generation. Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid tribute to Zohar, saying he "was one of the greatest Israeli filmmakers – an actor, screenwriter and director who shaped our film world. His great contribution to Israeli culture will be remembered for generations." "Personally, I will never forget his performances in front of soldiers together with Shaike Ofir and Yehoram Gaon. Violence in the Knesset: New documentation confirms Ben Gvir's account of what happened MKs almost come to blows during debate on death penalty for terrorists. Additional documentation of the confrontation between MK Itamar Ben Gvir and MKs Ahmad Tibi and Osama Saadi was published on Thursday morning and appears to confirm Ben Gvir's claim that Saadi and Tibi approached him in a threatening manner before a quarrel broke out between them that almost led to a brawl. The incident occurred on Wednesday during discussion of new legislation proposed by MKs Ben Gvir and May Golan of the Likud party, in the form of a bill that would have imposed the death penalty on any person who either intentionally or unintentionally caused the death of an Israeli citizen when the actions leading to the death were motivated by racism or hostility toward the State of Israel or the general Israeli public. 33 MKs voted in favor of the bill and 52 MKs voted against, defeating it. On the latest list of sanctioned individuals was God Nisanov, an Azerbaijan-born real estate developer whom Secretary of State Antony Blinken called "one of the richest men in Europe and a close associate of several Russian officials." Hours after the announcement, the World Jewish Congress announced that Nisanov had been removed from the organization's leadership because of the sanctions. "The World Jewish Congress reiterates and reaffirms that no one who is included on any list of sanctioned individuals by the United States, the United Kingdom or the European Union in relation to the conflict in Ukraine can hold any position or play any role in the organization," the announcement said. "Accordingly, God Nisanov is no longer a WJC vice president and has ceased to serve on the WJC Executive Committee." Born in Azerbaijan, Nisanov is perhaps the most prominent member of that country's community of Mountain Jews. As the director of the Association of Mountain Jews, he has sponsored various efforts to support the community, including the establishment of a museum and cultural center in Moscow. He has donated to Jewish schools and other projects and has been affiliated with the Russian Jewish Congress and the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia. He was honored at the Kremlin in July 2014 when Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded him the country's "Order of Friendship" for his work on economic development projects. That detail was included in a biography that was deleted from the World Jewish Congress website Thursday. From the moment the United States and other Western power moved to sanction Russia over its actions in Ukraine in February, several Russian Jewish oligarchs were high on the list of anticipated targets. Nisanov's name, for example, appeared on a list of such targets produced by the Treasury Department back in 2018. The sanctions on Nisanov come after similar measures were imposed on peers in Russian Jewish philanthropy such as Roman Abramovich, Moshe Kantor and the trio behind the Genesis Philanthropy Group. Kantor resigned as president of the European Jewish Congress after being sanctioned by the United Kingdom in April; that group is the World Jewish Congress's European affiliate.
