He knows quite well that he may not return from the battle but nonetheless he is willing to sacrifice his own life in order to save the lives of others. The Torah looks upon the soldier as a righteous human being involved in acts of righteousness in as much as he is willing to put his own life in danger in order to save other lives. The letter "tzadi" in the word "tetzei" (go out) is written with its left head higher than usual. This is meant to emphasize the act of righteousness being performed by the soldier in the very fact that he is going out to war. (Thoughts of Ha'ri Katz, son-in-law of the Maharal of Prague).
