Zionism and Ketchikan

Try As Much As Possible

Rabbi Yisroel Salanter used to say, "There is no greater illness than discouragement." At times a person may take note of all his faults and failures and give up hope of improving.

But compare spiritual growth  to monetary growth. A person tries to gather as much money as possible even if he will not become wealthy. Someone suffering physical pain also tries to alleviate some of the pain even if he is unable to bring about a complete cure. Rabbi Salanter said our attitude towards refraining from evil and performing good deeds should be the same as gathering money or dealing with physical pain. Even if someone will be far from perfect, he should at least try to do as many good deeds as possible and refrain from violating as many prohibitions as he can.
This is what we do in other areas, it is only discouragement that stops us.

5. New Site Brings Zionism to the YouTube Generation
by David Lev New Site Brings Zionism to the YouTube Generation

Many people who love Israel freely use the term "Zionist" to describe themselves. But how many know what Zionism is really all about?

Not too many, according to David Isaac, of the web site Zionism 101. The current state of Zionist education – i.e. the teaching of the principles of Zionism, why there was a Zionist movement, what the various leaders of the movement represented, etc. - is woefully poor, and much of it has to do with the fact that even though the Zionist movement has progressed since its beginnings some 100 years ago, its "interface" to the public has lagged.

"A high level of Zionist knowledge among Jews and Christians is rare. Most don't have even a rudimentary knowledge of the modern Zionist movement," Isaac said.

Unfortunately, the Internet has not helped matters, said Isaac – with the same old-fashioned approach being transferred from the printed page to cyberspace. "The sites I've seen on Zionism are rather poor, very text-heavy, not very attractive," Isaac said.

If there's one thing educators have learned, it's that students would much rather watch a movie than read a book – so Isaac, in an attempt to reach more people with the message of what Zionism is all about, has been developing a site called Zionism 101, which includes YouTube-style videos that make it easy to understand what the movement is all about.

The site is organized according to courses – 20 of them, on topics including Founding Fathers (with videos on Theodor Herzl, David Ben-Gurion, Ze'ev Jabotinsky, and others), the origins of Zionism, movements in the Jewish world that attempted to supplant or replace Zionism, the Mandatory period in the Land of Israel, Christian Zionism, US-Israel relations, the story of Israel's wars, the search for peace, and much more. The site is completely free (you just have to register), and most of the videos are just 5-10 minutes long. (The longest one currently on the site is about 20 minutes.)

The films are built from authentic period footage and photographs, offering students a window into the past. All films are original to the site, and are supplemented by timelines, selected writings and a bibliography for those who wish to extend their knowledge.

The site is great not only for those getting an "elementary education" in Zionism, Isaac said, but also for those who already know what Zionism is all about. "While Zionism 101 is primarily for those who want to learn the basics, more knowledgeable students will also find the site valuable as there are many details to the Zionist struggle known only by a few," he said.

Isaac, executive director of Zionism 101, is an Assistant Editor at a national newspaper and has been working on Zionism 101 for several years, inspired by his good friend Herbert Zweibon, who passed away in 2011. Zweibon headed the Americans for a Safe Israel (AFSI) organization, which tirelessly lobbied for Israeli security and worked to keep alive the legacy of Ze'ev Jabotinsky revisionist Zionist views.

OUCH !!!! and the answer to your prayers on the last day of the Jewish Year

THE ANSWER TO YOUR PRAYERS

I asked
for strength, and
God gave difficulties to make me strong.
I asked for wisdom, and
God gave me problems to solve.
I asked for prosperity, and
God gave me brawn and brain to work.
I asked for courage, and
God gave me dangers to overcome.

I asked
for love, and
God gave me troubled people to help.
I asked for favors, and
God gave me opportunities.
I received nothing
I wanted.
I received everything
I needed.
My prayers were answered.

Subject: OUCH !!!!

MUST READ BEFORE WATCHING VIDEO AND SOUND ON!!

The 3,150 m long Lefortovo tunnel in Russia , (near Poland
) is the longest In-city tunnel in all of Europe . It is nicknamed 'The Tunnel of Death'. See for yourself why. There is a river running over the tunnel and water leaks through in some areas. When the temperature reaches nearly 0°C like it does during the winter in Russia , the road freezes and becomes as slippery as . well . . . ice.. The result is the attached video which was taken during a single day with the tunnel surveillance camera.
Congratulations to the dual-carriage bus driver - imagine the passengers in the back! What a ride! The next time you complain about traffic, remember this video...love that Russian engineering. Be careful how you drive home!

Teshuvah, Repentance

This is Judaism's time for introspection, when Jews look back and examine their actions in the year that has just ended, seeking to improve their observance of the Torah's commandments directed towards G-d and towards their fellow man. They are expected to ask forgiveness from those they may have offended or hurt during the past year, a stipulation for Heavenly forgiveness for sins towards one's fellow man.

Repentance includes several steps: recognition of the sin, confessing the sin, and resolving not to repeat it in the future. Many books and articles have been written on how to do teshuva, repentance, with the basic text being Maimonides' "Hilkhot Teshuva" [The Laws of Teshuva, ed.]. Rabbi Joseph Ber Soloveitchik's "Al Hateshuva", based on Maimonides' work, has become a classic text.  Both works, and many others, are available in English.

Rabbi Chaim Druckman, venerable head of Or Etzion Yeshiva, formerly MK, head of all the hesder yeshivas and the Conversion Authority, said Monday at a study day about the Days of Awe that repentance, or teshuva, is a return to a person's source.

Happy Friday and New Year and what do you think about our future economics

Life is an Exciting Challenge

The classic work of Jewish Ethics, "Path of the Just," says: "Every aspect of our lives is a challenge and test."

With this perspective, life will never be boring or mundane. Every single situation and occurrence is different from every other - and each is an opportunity for elevation and growth.

When you are aware that a situation is a test, you will find it much easier to deal with. To illustrate this concept, imagine that you went for a job interview and the potential employer shouted an insult at you.

You would most probably feel either upset or angry. But if someone told you in advance that this employer shouts at job candidates to test their reaction to stress, you would find it easy to remain calm. You realize it is just a test and it is in your best interests to pass it.

That is how we can view each event and situation. It is a test of our spiritual strength and courage, and we can look forward to passing it.

If someone doesn't get they are being tested, just realize that our spouses and our work and our economics (see below) are our tests and you will see that we are all constantly being tested. For some it is their marriage. For some it is their job or lack or one. For some it is being Rich and others poor. All one has to do is open your eyes to see our tests. Some people think that miracles only happened in biblical times. Whey they become aware, they will see like the tests, they are constantly happening.

This is a scary challenge for the new Year. How will we find the strength to keep our way of life?

The wise old man and Frank Sinatra in Israel and Stika Salmon run

Hate Evil, Not People

Hate the evil acts of the wicked, but do not hate the people themselves. Every person is worthy of being cherished by virtue of being created in the image of the Almighty. Therefore we cannot hate another person. Rather, our love for the Almighty should be so deeply internalized, that from this love we hate evil deeds. By hating only evil actions, you elevate yourself because you are increasing your love for the Almighty.

The next time you see someone do something evil, try to distinguish between hatred of the act and hatred of the person.

get a load of this...and the brain is a powerful instrument and Sitka National Park

Express Gratitude Rather Than Guilt

Some people tend to express guilt when others do things for them. You will hear them saying things like, "I feel guilty for having bothered you." "I am so sorry that I made you go out of your way." "I feel bad for having taken your time." "Please forgive me for your having to do this for me."

People who have this pattern are often sensitive people who don't want to cause others any distress or unpleasantness. At times they could use a boost to their self-image. By realizing that they have infinite value and worth because they are created in the image of the Almighty, they will increase their realization that they deserve the kindness and goodness that others do for them.

When someone goes out of their way to do something for you or helps you in any way, express gratitude rather than guilt. When you say, "I am so very grateful for all the effort you put into this," or "Thank you greatly for having done so much for me," you experience the positive energy of feelings of gratitude. And the person you are telling this to will experience positive energy for being appreciated.

The brain is a powerful instrument. Ask it for 10 reasons to rob a bank and it will give them to you -- 1) It will be exciting 2) Think of all the good I can do with the money 3) They're insured ... Ask your brain for 10 reasons not to rob a bank and it will give them to you -- 1) It's wrong 2) You'll probably be caught 3) Your next girlfriend's name will be Bubba ... Knowing that the brain can justify almost any action, you must ask it "What is the right thing to do?" And often, it is still very worthwhile to ask a friend who doesn't have the same vested interests as you for his opinion. It helps to keep you objective.

We can use our brains to better our situation or make it worse. We all know people who can grab misery out of times of joy. A waiter once told me that sometimes he feels like asking some diners after their meal, "So, was anything OK?" We have the ability to look at the glass as half full or half empty -- although that often depends on whether you are pouring or drinking. We must use our brains to focus on the positive.

History Exam..My Score 19-and Purposeful Pain helps you change your live and seaplane over Juneau Ice Fields

Gear Up For Change

If you would find it pleasurable to make positive changes, what changes would enhance your life the most?

Think of the inner resources that would help you make one of those changes.

As you work on making that change, feel a sense of joy and empowerment that you are gaining greater self-mastery.

Love Yehuda Lave

I used to visit the Rehab Unit where people are recovering from hip and knee replacements. Often they are in great pain. It is painful to see their pain.

I tell the patient: I wish I could take away your pain, but I can't. Besides praying for your full and speedy recovery, I could -- if you are interested -- teach you how to minimize the intensity of your pain. Nine out of ten patients are fascinated and anxious to learn; one out of ten thanks me for my visit and asks me to leave.

I then continue: There are two types of pain -- meaningful pain and meaningless pain. If one takes a beating, it is painful; if one takes a beating to protect his child or instead of his child being hit, it is less painful. Why? Making a choice to receive the pain rather than have your child receive the pain gives meaning to the suffering.

Pain after an operation is meaningful. It means that you are alive. It means that your body works and hopefully is healing. There is a syndrome where a child is born without the ability to feel pain. Unfortunately, these children do not usually live long because they don't know when they are bleeding, if they are too close to a fire or are injured.

There are other benefits of pain. Pain can be a wake-up call from the Almighty to look into your deeds and your life. Is there anything that you should change or could do better? There is a Torah concept that the Almighty deals with us "mida k'neged mida" measure for measure. If one stubs his toe, he should not only think about the advisability of wearing shoes, but also on a metaphysical level "Who have I been kicking around?" Even if you don't figure out the reason, you can benefit from the introspection and improve your character and actions.

On a spiritual level, pain also serves as an atonement. When I am in pain, I ask the Almighty, "Please, accept this pain as an atonement for anything I have done wrong." One is certainly better off accepting the pain with love and appreciation rather than with anger and resentment.

If the Almighty gives a person pain as a wake-up call or as an atonement and the person ignores it, he has taken something that is meaningful and could benefit him and relegates it to the level of randomness and meaninglessness -- which is not only sad, but more painful.

If you know someone in pain, perhaps you can help them by sharing some of these ideas. May them help you have a meaningful period of retrospection before the new Year.

The List Everyone Is Talking About and heed the cry for respect and historic Juneau, Alaska

Heed the Cry for Respect

Every person you meet deeply desires to be treated with respect. If you listen carefully, you will hear them cry: "Please consider me an important person. Don't embarrass or insult me. Please listen to me when I speak."

If you learn to treat every person you meet with respect, you will have many friends throughout your life. Upon meeting another person, ask yourself, "What can I say to this person to show him respect?

It appears however that politicians are an exception to the above rule. Dems aren't much worse than the Reps, They're all a bunch of crooks.
