The world works on kindness and interesting world facts

The Torah tells us that "God created man in His own image" (Genesis 1:27). The Chofetz Chaim (a great sage of the early 1900's) comments that "image of God" means that man has the ability to emulate God, who bestows kindness on people. Performing acts of kindness reflects God's attributes. Thinking "Why should I help others?" alienates a person from Godliness.

The very survival of humanity depends on kindness. Every person, without exception, needs the help of his fellow human being. The prophet Michah (6:8) tells us, "... what does God require of you, but to act justly, to love kindness and to walk humbly with God." Kindness is something we must do. It helps our fellow human being, helps bring the world one step closer to perfection while raising our level of spirituality. That must be our focus, not the response or recognition we hope to receive from those whom we help.

This last week was the reading of the opening portion of the old testament in the synagogue

Each year we read through the same biblical story, but our duties as adults are to constantly keep working on our faith and belief system. When one is given a brain by G-d, we have the duty to use it.

Fortunately, in our lives today, we have brilliant minds that spend their time studying and learning spiritually as opposed to just making money. Now I am not criticizing making money, but as we learn from above our purpose on this earth is to emulate G-d. The great minds that give their time to help me learn new insights each year, make my Sabbaths special.

Some writings are imiginative, others are controversal, but they are all interesting to learn and discuss. The Talmud teaches that many concepts are not mutually exculusive, but can all be true. Among the things I learned this weekend, were 1) Cain, the first child of Adam and Eve, may have been the Snake's son and not Adam's.
2) Now that I have your attention, another writer (Rabbi Bick), proposes based on the text that Cain was guilty of  manslaughter and not murder. He also proposes that Cain was the important one of the two brothers and Hevel (in Hebrew meaning air or nothingness) was a copycat and not very bright.

SOME INTERESTING GEOGRAPHY

Alaska

More than half of the coastline of the entire United States is in Alaska.

Amazon

The Amazon rainforest produces more than 20% the world's oxygen supply.  The Amazon River pushes so much water into the Atlantic Ocean that, more than one hundred miles at sea off the mouth of the river, one can dip fresh water out of the ocean.  The volume of water in the Amazon river is greater than the next eight largest rivers in the world combined and three times the flow of all rivers in the United States.

Antarctica

Antarctica is the only land on our planet that is not owned by any country.  Ninety percent of the world's ice covers Antarctica.  This ice also represents seventy % of all the fresh water in the world.  As strange as it sounds, however, Antarctica is essentially a desert.  The average yearly total precipitation is about two inches.  Although covered with ice (all but 0.4% of it, that is), Antarctica is the driest place on the planet, with an absolute humidity lower than the Gobi desert.

Brazil

Brazil got its name from the nut, not the other way around.

Canada

Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world combined.  Canada is an Indian word meaning 'Big Village.'

Chicago

Next to Warsaw, Chicago has the largest Polish population in the world.

Detroit

Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan carries the designation M-1, so named because it was the first paved road any where.

Damascus, Syria

Damascus, Syria, was flourishing a couple of thousand years before Rome was founded in 753 BC, making it the oldest continuously inhabited city in existence.

Istanbul , Turkey

Istanbul (aka Constantinople), Turkey, is the only city in the world located on two continents.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles' full name is El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula -- and can be abbreviated to 3.63% of its size: L.A.

New York City

The term 'The Big Apple' was coined by touring jazz musicians of the 1930's who used the slang expression 'apple' for any town or city.  Therefore, to play New York City is to play the big time - The Big Apple.

There are more Irish in New York City than in Dublin, Ireland; more Italians in New York City than in Rome, Italy; and more Jews in New York City than in Tel Aviv, Israel..

Ohio

There are no natural lakes in the state of Ohio, every one is man made.

Pitcairn Island

The smallest island with country status is Pitcairn in Polynesia , at just 1.75 sq. miles.

Rome

The first city to reach a population of 1 million people was Rome, Italy in 133 B.C.  There is a city called Rome on every continent.

Siberia

Siberia contains more than 25% of the world's forests.

S.M.O.M

The actual smallest sovereign entity in the world is the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (S.M.O.M.).  It is located in the city of Rome, Italy, has an area of two tennis courts, and as of 2001 has a population of 80, 20 less people than the Vatican.  It is a sovereign entity under international law, just as the Vatican is.

Sahara Desert

In the Sahara Desert, there is a town named Tidikelt, which did not receive a drop of rain for ten years.  Technically though, the driest place on Earth is in the valleys of the Antarctic near Ross Island. There has been no rainfall there for two million years.

Spain

SPAIN literally means 'the land of rabbits.'

St. Paul, Minnesota, was originally called Pig's Eye after a man named Pierre 'Pig's Eye' Parrant who set up the first business there.

Roads

Chances that a road is unpaved in the U.S.A: 1%, in Canada: 75%.

Texas

The deepest hole ever made in the world is in Texas.  It is as deep as 20 empire state buildings but only 3 inches wide.

United States

The Interstate System requires that one-mile in every five must be straight.  These straight sections are usable as airstrips in times of war or other emergencies.

Waterfalls

The water of Angel Falls (the World's highest) in Venezuela drops 3,212 feet.  It is 15 times higher than Niagara Falls.

It has been said that one should learn something new every day.  Unfortunately, many of us are at that age where what we learn today, we forget tomorrow.  But, give it a shot anyway!

Due to Budget Cuts and Live and Let Live

Live and Let Live

Happy people have a vast amount of things that they consider to be okay. We all have our limits.

But we can develop attitudes and reactions that enable us to accept, tolerate, and ignore many of the things

that annoy, irritate, and frustrate unhappy people.

Some people need things to be "just so" for them to feel comfortable and happy.

The more rules and specifics that are needed for this, the more likely that a person will experience much unhappiness.

Are there any people you dread interacting with? Those with a low threshold of okay-ness are often in this category.

They demand that everything has to be exactly as they wish it to be for them to be satisfied. These people are

highly critical of others. They get annoyed at others for minor and trivial matters that are not to their liking.

Don't be one of them for your own benefit and the welfare of those who interact with you. Forgive them. Many times, as

one of my friends just told me, it is because they had critical parents.

Develop a sense of perspective. Keep asking yourself, "How important is this for me to fulfill my life's mission?"

The clearer you are about which values are truly important to you, the easier it will be for you to accept and cope well

with trivial and minor aspects of life that are not just the way you would have wanted them to be.

DUE TO BUDGET CUTS, THIS IS YOUR NEW CUBICLE

NEW OFFICE POLICY

Dress Code:

1) You are advised to come to work dressed according to
your salary.

2) If we see you wearing Prada shoes and carrying a
Gucci bag, we will assume you are doing well financially
and therefore do not need a raise.

3) If you dress poorly, you need to learn to manage your
money better, so that you may buy nicer clothes, and
therefore you do not need a raise.

4) If you dress just right, you are right where you need
to be and therefore you do not need a raise.

Sick Days:
We will no longer accept a doctor's statement as proof
of sickness. If you are able to go to the doctor, you are able to come to work.

Personal Days:
Each employee will receive 104 personal days a year.
They are called Saturdays & Sundays.

Bereavement Leave:
This is no excuse for missing work. There is nothing
you can do for dead friends, relatives or co-workers. Every
effort should be made to have non-employees attend the
funeral arrangements in your place. In rare cases where
employee involvement is necessary, the funeral should be
scheduled in the late afternoon. We will be glad to
allow you to work through your lunch hour and
subsequently leave one hour early.

Bathroom Breaks:
Entirely too much time is being spent in the toilet.
There is now a strict three-minute time limit in the
stalls. At the end of three minutes, an alarm will
sound, the toilet paper roll will retract, the stall
door will open, and a picture will be taken. After your
second offense, your picture will be posted on the
company bulletin board under the 'Chronic Offenders'
category. Anyone caught smiling in the picture will be
sectioned under the company's mental health policy.

Lunch Break: (Love this one)

* Skinny people get 30 minutes for lunch, as they need
to eat more, so that they can look healthy.

* Normal size people get 15 minutes for lunch to get a
balanced meal to maintain their average figure.

* Chubby people get 5 minutes for lunch, because that's
all the time needed to drink a Slim-Fast.

Thank you for your loyalty to our company. We are here
to provide a positive employment experience. Therefore,
all questions, comments, concerns, complaints,
frustrations, irritations, aggravations, insinuations,
allegations, accusations, contemplations, consternation

Honda Video and appreciate being alive

Appreciate Being Alive

I  observed that a friend had a serene nature and positive outlook on life.

"How did you develop such a serene and happy way of being?" I asked her.

"I almost died twice and that taught me to ignore the irrelevant and unimportant," she said to me. "I had problems with my heart. Just surviving the surgery gave me a greater appreciation for being alive. But what totally transformed me was riding my motorcycle off a cliff. The last thing I saw was the ground rushing to greet me. Then two days later I found myself in a hospital bed in serious condition. I had broken bones and didn't know if I would wake make it. Now every time I wake up, I consider myself a winner. I kill everyone with kindness, and it is hard to fight with me, when I do that.

This works great except with people that push your buttons. For them you have to keep working on yourself.

Not everybody has this mazel (karma) but many people are not afraid to abuse you. No one however, can abuse you unless you let them. Be peaceful and loving and kill people with kindness, but respect yourself.

Read intro before watching: Amazing commercial

This is just way TOO cool a video.  You have to see it to believe it
(but be sure to first read the text intro below).

If you thought that the people who set up a room full of dominoes to have
them knocked over later was amazing, you haven't seen anything yet..

There are no computer graphics or digital tricks in these images.
Everything that you see happened in real time exactly as you see it..

The recording required 606 takes and in the first 605 takes there always
was something, usually of minor importance, that didn't work.  It was
necessary for the recording team to install the set-up time after time and
it took several weeks working day and night to achieve this effect.

The recording cost 6 million dollars and it took 3 months to finish,
including the engineering design of the sequence.

The durat ion of the video is only 2 minutes, but every time that Honda
shows the commercial on British television, they make enough money to
support any of us for the rest of our lives.  However, this commercial has
turned out to be the most displayed in the history of the Internet.

Honda execs think that it will pay for itself simply because of the free
showings (Honda is not paying one cent for you to see it)

When Honda senior execs viewed it, they immediately approved it without
hesitation-including costs.

There are only six Honda Accords built by hand in the whole world, and to
the horror of Honda engineers, the recording team disassembled two of them
for the recording.

Everything you see in the sequence (besides the walls, floor, ramp and
untouched Honda Accord) is part of those two automobiles.  The voice is
that of G arrison Keiller. The commercial was so well received by Honda
execs when they saw it, that t heir first comment was how amazing the
computer graphics were.  They almost fell out of their chairs when told
that the recording was real without any graphics manipulation.

By the way, about the wind shield wipers in the new Honda Accords, they
are sensitive to water and designed to start working as soon as they get
wet. The video is in the attachment, labeled ALLPhysics.wmv

Love Comes from Giving and "Sisters, Mount Washington, Salem the State Capital"

Love Comes From Giving

Love comes from "giving to someone." When you do altruistic acts of kindness, you are giving the other person part of yourself. You will therefore feel love for the recipient of your acts of kindness - because you will find yourself included in the other person and you will identify with him. Just as you love yourself, so too will you love the other person.

The ultimate level to strive for is that even if someone wrongs you, you will view it the same as if someone's right hand accidentally cut their own left hand. Of course while you will try to prevent this from happening, you will not take revenge on your own hand!!

The degree of love as you have for yourself is the degree of love we should have for others.

Today, think of a specific person who would gain greatly from your being more giving. (If you can't think of anyone, that person might be you...)

Praise your students and "Bend Oregon Historical Museum in Old Reid Schoolhouse"

Enthusiastic Praise

Sincere praise at the right time can transform a person's life. We all need feedback from others. Young children have no way of knowing how well they are doing unless they get feedback from others. And we all were once children. And we never outgrow our need for feedback.

Here is an example from a grown up brilliant mind. "When I was a young boy, I had a tendency to daydream and I didn't always pay attention when my teachers were talking. My self-image was that I wasn't especially bright. But one sensitive teacher changed my life. I had received a 50 on a  test. The teacher called me over and privately told me, 'You only answered half the questions on the test. But I want to point out to you that what you did answer shows that you have a deep understanding of the concepts.' I felt good, but it didn't make too much of a difference. The next week, I once again answered only half the questions and received only a 50. Once again the teacher called me over and told me, "You didn't answer half the questions. But I want to point out to you that what you answered, you answered exceedingly well. You really understand the ideas you understand.' This opened my eyes. I saw that I had a much better mind than I had previously thought. I began to concentrate in class. The next four weeks in a row I received a 100 on each test. And after that I always got at least a 90. Sincere praise made me what I am today."

Speaking of students and praise, here is my visit to an schoolhouse in Bend, that has been converted to a museum of the area.

Who made the world and "Shevlin Park in Bend Oregon"

"A disbeliever once asked the famous Rabbi Akiva, 'Who created the world?' 'The Almighty,' replied Rabbi Akiva. 'Prove it,' demanded the disbeliever. Rabbi Akiva replied, 'Come back tomorrow.'

"When the man returned on the following day, Rabbi Akiva asked him, 'What are you wearing?' 'A robe,' replied the man. 'Who made it?' asked Rabbi Akiva. 'The weaver,' said the man. 'I don't believe you! Prove it,' demanded Rabbi Akiva.

" 'That is ridiculous. Can't you tell from the fabric and design that a weaver made this garment?' answered the man. Rabbi Akiva then responded, 'And you - can you not clearly tell that God made the world?'

"After the disbeliever left, Rabbi Akiva explained to his students, 'Just as a house was obviously built by a builder and a garment obviously sewn by a tailor, so was the world (which follows a natural order) obviously made by a Creator!' "

A second example

"The Emperor Hadrian asked Rabbi Yehoshua, 'Does the world have a master?' 'Certainly,' replied Rabbi Yehoshua. 'Did you think the world exists without an owner?'

" 'Who then is the master?' asked Hadrian. 'The Almighty is the Creator of heaven and earth,' responded Rabbi Yehoshua. Hadrian persisted, 'If this is true, why doesn't He reveal Himself a few times a year so that people should fear Him?'

" 'That would be impossible,' replied Rabbi Yehoshua, 'for it says (Exodus 33:20), "No man can see Me and live." ' 'I don't believe that!' responded Hadrian angrily. 'No one can be so great that it is impossible even to look at him.' Rabbi Yehoshua left.

"Later, at noontime, Rabbi Yehoshua returned and asked the Emperor to step outside. 'I am ready to show you the Almighty!' he announced. Curious, Hadrian followed him to the palace garden.

" 'Look straight up into the sun. There you will discover God!' exclaimed Rabbi Yehoshua. 'What?' retorted Hadrian, bewildered. 'Do you know what you are saying? Everyone knows that it is impossible to look directly into the sun at noon!'

"Rabbi Yehoshua smiled. 'Note your own statement! You admit that no one can gaze at the sun's full strength when it is at its zenith. The sun is only one of the Almighty's servants, and its glory is only one millionth of a fraction of God's splendor. How then do you expect people to be able to look at Him? Yet, He promised that the day will come when He alone will be exalted and His greatness be accepted by all!' "

It is fascinating finding thousands of years old eternal answers to eternal questions. It is also fascinating to note that in the first midrash it says, "After the disbeliever left..." We note from this that in spite of the compelling answer, the man still left a disbeliever. Winston Churchill once said to the effect of "Many people have stumbled across truth ... and then picked themselves up as if nothing happened." It is hard to get past our preconceived notions and prejudices, no matter how intellectually honest we claim to be.

GLAD TO HELP AND "P.S. Ogden Gorge over Crooked River, one of highest Gorge's in World"

Glad To Help

Be grateful to anyone you help. They are helping you fulfill your life's mission.

Be especially careful not to speak or act condescendingly when you try to help someone. The good you do can be offset by the damage caused by an insulting tone.

I found this especially true when dealing with a loved one today. His choices of  communication are frustrating, causing miscommunication, that he blames on others. By this time of my life, since I have been dealing with him for 50 years, I should just bless him when he is difficult, but being human, I except him to be so as well, and believe me he is human, with all that means.

This game will drive you up a wall & Whom do you Want to Be?

Whom Do You Want To Be?

What kind of person do you really want to be?

Writing this in the form of a mission statement or essay has a powerful effect on one's self-image. The act of writing that you want to be "kind" and "compassionate" motivates positive action.

Actually, the question "What kind of person are you?" is answered by the way you speak to others and what you do for them.

Soul is on a mission and"Smith Rock State Park, Oregon"

Soul is on a Mission

Your soul is on a mission from its Creator. You are unique. Only you are you, now and always. Only you have your unique life mission. Your loving Father and awesomely powerful Creator loves you and wants you to succeed.

The situations and occurrences throughout your life are Divinely orchestrated to elevate you and your character. The questions you ask yourself about life create you and get you to focus on a direction. The Torah verse states (Deuteronomy 10:12): "And now, what does the Almighty ask from you?" Please note the important word, "Now."

This is a question that we need to be aware of many times throughout each day. "Right now, what am I being asked to think, say, and do?"

This is my main philosphy of life. It helps me to know that at each and every moment--G-d is testing me. Every thing and I mean everything that comes into my life, from my wife to my Rabbi are tests for me. I once had an Indian friend, who thought only the big things were tests, not little things. Just as we are not to distinguish between what is an important mitzvah (good deed) and an unimportant mitzvah, one must believe that everything and I mean everything is a test in our faith in G-d.

As part of my travel video, I was by the Crooked River Gorge. It is a site to see!!

The Crooked River High Bridge is a steel arch bridge that spans the Crooked River gorge in Jefferson County, Oregon. The bridge was designed by Conde McCullough and was completed in 1926. Shortly after its completion, Oregon State Highway Division created the Peter Skene Ogden Park just to the south of the bridge.

The bridge has a total length of 464 feet with a main span of 330 feet. The deck is 295 ft above the canyon floor. The bridge was eventually unable to keep up with the growing traffic demands of U.S. Highway 97, and was replaced by the wider Rex T. Barber Veterans Memorial Bridge. The old bridge is open to pedestrians.

HEALTH QUESTIONS and Tailor your help to the Person

Tailor your Help to the Person

Be flexible when you try to help someone. If the first strategy you try doesn't seem to work, try another approach. Since every person is unique, different approaches are necessary for different people.

When talking to someone, note the feedback you receive from his slight changes in facial expression. Ask the person how the ideas you are saying sound to him.

If you are not able to help someone, suggest another person who might be able to help him.

Here for example is a Doctor who has an unusual approach

Love Yehuda

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?

A: Heart only good for so many beats, and that it... Don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually. Speed up heart not make live longer; that like say you can extend life of car by driving faster. Want live longer? Take nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does cow eat? Hay and corn. What are these? Vegetables. So, steak nothing more than efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef also good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And pork chop can give 100% recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine. That means they take water out of fruity bit; get even more of goodness that way. Beer also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: If you have body and you have fat, ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Cannot think of single one, sorry. My philosophy: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU NOT LISTENING!!! .... Foods fried in vegetable oil. How getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise muscle, it get bigger. You should only do sit-ups if want bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: You crazy? HELLO ...

Cocoa beans! Vegetable!!! Cocoa beans best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming good for figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

AND.....

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies:

1. The Japanese eat very little fat

And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat

And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine

And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4 The Italians drink a lot of red wine

And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats

And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION.....

Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Bring about Miracles in People's Lives

Be aware of the positive attributes and behaviors of the people with whom you come into contact and help them build upon their strengths. Encouragement is a much more powerful tool for change and growth than blaming and condemning. You can bring about miracles in people's lives if you believe in their potential.

"Deschuttes Beer Company Tour in Bend Oregon"

Jewish Samurai

There once was a powerful Japanese emperor who needed a new chief samurai. So he sent out a declaration throughout the entire known world that he was searching for a chief. A year passed, and only three people applied for the very demanding position: a Japanese samurai, a Chinese samurai, and a Jewish samurai. The emperor asked the Japanese samurai to come in and demonstrate why he should be the chief samurai. The Japanese samurai opened a matchbox, and out popped a bumblebee. Whoosh!  went his sword. The bumblebee dropped dead, chopped in half. The emperor exclaimed, "That is very impressive!" The emperor then issued the same challenge to the Chinese samurai, to come in and demonstrate why he should be chosen. The Chinese samurai also opened a matchbox and out buzzed a fly. Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh! The fly dropped dead, chopped into four small pieces. The emperor exclaimed, That is very impressive!" Now the emperor turned to the Jewish samurai, and asked him to demonstrate why he should be the chief samurai. The Jewish Samurai opened a matchbox, and out flew a gnat. His flashing sword went Whoosh!  But the gnat was still alive and flying around. The emperor, obviously disappointed, said,  "Very ambitious, but why is that gnat not dead?" The Jewish Samurai just smiled and said, "Circumcision is not meant to kill."
