A person who wants to show off his knowledge will get upset if others fail to recognize what he knows. But a person who has humility will not demand recognition, and will not be bothered if others are unaware of what he knows (unless there is some practical difference involved). An example of when it effects you is when the other person who is wrong, insists it is done their way, and you have to live with a bad result. It is not showing off to want to live without errors in your life. If you are in control of yourself, you can speak up for yourself. As it says in "ethics of the fathers", If you are not for yourself, who will be?

Ask yourself, "What actual difference does it make if this person is or is not aware of what I know?"

No matter what side of the AISLE you're on, THIS is FUNNY and VERY telling!                   It just all depends on how you look at some things...   Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California , was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Congressman Harry Reid's great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in   Montana  in 1889.  Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.    The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows  in   Montana  territory:   On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: 'Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.'     So Judy recently e-mailed Congressman Harry Reid for information about their great-great uncle.   Harry Reid:     Believe it or not, Harry Reid's staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:    "Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed."    NOW THAT's how it's done, Folks! The Rambam, Maimonides, one of the great codifiers of Jewish law set out an eight point hierarchy for giving: They go in order of spirituality from top to bottom.  All charity is good, but some is more spiritually aware than others.

The word Jew is short for Just a Spiritual Seeker, so it is not enough just to follow the rules, one must always look for the way to do things in the highest spiritual way, this is how we get close to G-d.

1)Giving a present, lending money, taking as a partner or finding work for someone before he needs to ask for charity.

2)Giving charity to the poor when both the donor and the recipient are unaware of each others identity.

3)The donor knows the recipient's identity, but the recipient does not know the donor.

4)The recipient knows the donor's identity, but the donor does not know the recipient.

5)The donor gives charity even before he is asked.

6)The donor gives to the poor person after being asked for charity.

7)The donor gives less than he should, but gives in a pleasant manner.

8)The donor gives charity grudgingly (he feels displeasure, but doesn't show it).

Work On Your Traits

Overcoming negative character traits is the essence and purpose of life. Therefore, we need to continuously strengthen ourselves. If you do not work on overcoming your traits, what is the purpose of your life?

Today, which two negative character traits would you like most to change? Imagine a miracle happened and you woke up tomorrow with the positive traits that are the polar opposites of those traits. In what ways would your life be different?

   Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
   
   He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
   
   - Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
   - Why the early bird gets the worm;
   - Life isn't always fair;and maybe it was my fault.
   
   Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
   
   His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
   
   Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
   
   Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
   
   Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot... She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.
   
   He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers:
   I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.
   
   Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Defuse Your Anger Messages

Simply telling yourself, "I should not be angry right now," will usually not calm you. Moreover, if you lose your temper and tell yourself you shouldn't be angry, you are apt to feel excessive anxiety and guilt in addition to the anger.

Rather, try to be aware of what specifically is making you angry. (For example, "It's awful that he is talking to me this way.") Once you give up those anger-causing self-statements, you will feel less anger.

Challenge your self-statements that lead to anger. ("Why is it so awful if he talks to me this way? I might not enjoy it, but I will not take it to heart.")

Once you perceive someone's behavior or words in a positive or even neutral light, you will not be angry. ("He's speaking to me that way because he cares about me and wants me to improve." Or, "He's talking this way because he is personally upset.")

Because of its lack of infrastructure and inadequate transportation and lodging,  most travel agencies would not think of going there. But for those who have seen the pictures of the Red land, no one can resist being attracted to its beautiful scenery!    In these mountains and hills every inch of land is cultivated to the maximum causing unwanted damage to the place through erosion.  That's why returning to forestry is being advocated.   Dongchuan Red Land represents Yunnan mountain valley's most attractive colors.     Multicolor Waves ---- so magnificent.   Crops on the Red Land such as potatoes, oats, corn, oil flower vegetables.  Different colored crops, so arranged that when looking from afar, it seems  God has painted a cloth of gorgeous colors.     Because each family owns different sizes and shapes of land and each plants its own  preference of crops, this beautiful tableau is produced. During harvest time,  the soil is turned over and exposes this unusually red color.      In September , white-colored oil flowers are in bloom on the whole mountain.  It is a pity they cover up the beautiful red color.  The best time for sightseeing tour is middle of  November .     Early in the morning, donkey-ridden carts full of harvest transporting to the town, while children are walking in the opposite direction to school.   Different seasons, different time, different sunlight, produce different colors      The most dazzling color is just before the sun sets. Bad tempered donkey did not want to work with the bull ...   Different animals have different temperaments, they were used together to control each other. If one of them refused to move, the other one would force it .  Child helping to harvest vegetables.   Clear sky with a rainbow after the rain.   This hallowed place is the most distinct part of the land.  Later, in order to promote tourism it was named Lexiaguo,  meaning--- the place where beautiful colors set.   A town in Lexiaguo. Lexiaguo is full of crop fields whose curves and lines add beauty to the scenery.   The curve-like crops' lines are enhanced by the red soil.

Rabbi Yerucham Levovitz said, "When someone insults you, even for selfish reasons, do not automatically disregard what he says. Rather, check yourself to see if there is any aspect of truth, regardless of his intention, and try to learn from it."

For example, if someone says you are "lazy," instead of becoming upset, use this as a motivation to overcome some aspect of laziness you do have. Even though you are usually not lazy, you can still improve.

The saintly Rabbi, Chafetz Chaim, used to direct his yeshiva students to eat properly, get enough sleep, and take walks. Only if someone is healthy will he be able to study properly. Occasionally the Chafetz Chaim personally closed the lights in his yeshiva late at night to make sure the students got sufficient rest.

Unique Animals and Unique People

GOOD MORNING! Did you ever wonder what really distinguishes a human being from an animal? Every human has four deep seated needs -meaning, pleasure, understanding and self-actualization. Cows don't have these needs. Dogs don't have these needs. Cats ... no way!

The renowned psychiatrist Viktor Fankel wrote in Man's Search for Meaning, "Man's search for meaning is the primary motivation in his life and not a 'secondary rationalization' of instinctual drives... A public-opinion poll was conducted a few years ago in France. The results showed that 89 percent of the people polled admitted that man needs 'something' to live for."

According to Western ideology, there is no absolute purpose to life. Good and evil, meaning and meaninglessness, are matters of personal taste. Yet with all the "freedoms" this philosophy embraces, it disposes of the one and only ingredient that gives life profound and lasting satisfaction: a transcendent purpose - the recognition of a Creator who cares about man's actions. A Creator Who invests him with the ability to make choices that either further God's purpose or undermine it.

As vitally as he needs to breathe, eat and sleep, every human being needs to know that his existence matters. The philosophies of relativism and purposelessness, however, inevitably engender in man gnawing questions about the meaning and purpose of his life. "If nothing really matters, why am I making such an effort to be a good person? Is life just about killing time until death?"

Understandably, this creates a subconscious anxiety which many people dread uncovering. Better to convince oneself that life has no purpose at all, than to confront the tormenting realization that I have lived life in ignorance of that purpose.

Those who do confront the question often embark on a painful, protracted search for meaning. Frequently, they drift through the array of alternatives to Western values, such as Zen, Buddhism and Transcendental Meditation. The greater majority, however, accepts society's insistence that there are no answers, and tries to deaden their pain through various mediums of distraction.

Some lose themselves in the world of entertainment and illusion -television, movies and video games. Others dedicate mind and soul to "making it" in their careers. Many, in an attempt to relieve their anxiety, adopt the belief that there is no Creator, no responsibility, no accountability and no goals. Without a viable alternative to meaninglessness, these people have no choice but to avoid contemplating life too seriously.

However, despite the best efforts of distraction and rationalization, our souls long for meaning. And until the soul receives the nourishment (read: meaning and purpose) it so vitally needs, man will never find lasting tranquility. On some level (most often subconscious), he will continue to be plagued by disharmony between what he deeply craves and what Western ideology claims life to offer.

As Torah Spiritual people our inner longing to lead meaningful, productive lives is nurtured and guided. The goal is our relationship with G-d. Our tools are the mitzvot, the commandments. The framework for success and meaning is neatly laid out for us in the intricate structure of Torah life. Best of all, we need not struggle to find the goal. We are free from the start to focus our energies and resources on achieving it.

Through Torah, the most mundane and routine activities of life are elevated to a Higher purpose. While we may never accomplish all that we should, a Torah lifestyle removes the specter of meaninglessness that haunts so many lives. The Torah provides an internal stability, gained from the knowledge that life is purposeful and valuable. We are given ongoing opportunities to accomplish things that are meaningful - and the realization that our choices truly matter. This is tremendously empowering and reassuring.

They make an unlikely trio, but Baloo the bear, Leo the lion and Shere Khan the tiger have forged an unusually strong bond. Considering that they would be mortal enemies if they ever were to meet in the wild, it is stunning to see their unique and genuine friendship in these intimate pictures. Rescued eight years ago during a police drug raid in Atlanta, Georgia , the three friends were only cubs at the time at barely two months old.     They had been kept as status symbol pets by the drug barons. Delivered to the Noah's Ark Animal Rescue Centre in Locust Grove, Georgia , the decision was made to keep the youngsters together, because of their budding rapport.   'We could have separated them, but since they came as a kind of family, the zoo decided to keep them together,' said Diane Smith, assistant director of Noah's Ark.     'To our knowledge, this is the only place where you'll find this combination of animals together.'   Living with the zoo's founders for the past eight years, Shere Khan, Baloo and Leo have now moved to a purpose-built habitat where the US public can now witness first hand their touching relationships.   'We didn't have the money to move them at first,' said Diane. 'Now their habitat is sorted and they have been moved away from the children's zoo areas where the public couldn't really get a good look. 'It is possible to see Baloo, who is a 1000lb bear, Shere Khan, a 350lb tiger and Leo, who is also 350lbs, messing around like brothers. 'They are totally oblivious to the fact that in any other circumstance they would not be friends.'   Handled by Charles and Jama Hedgecoth, the zoo's owners and founders, the three friendly giants appear to have have no comprehension of their animal differences. 'Baloo and Shere Khan are very close,' says Diane. 'That is because they rise early, and as Leo is a lion, he likes to spend most of the day sleeping. 'It is wonderful and magical to see a giant American Black Bear put his arm around a Bengal and then to see the tiger nuzzle up to the bear like a domestic cat. 'When Leo wakes up the three of them mess around for most of the day before they settle down to some food.'     Surprisingly for three apex predators with the power to kill with a single bite or swipe of their paw, they are very relaxed around each other. 'They eat, sleep and play together,' said Jama. 'As they treat each other as siblings they will lie on top of each other for heat and simply for affection. 'At the moment they are getting used to their new habitat. 'Shere Khan is being quite reticent about the move, but Baloo, the bear, is very good at leading him on and making him feel comfortable and safe.'   Explaining that the three 'brothers' have always seemed to share a unique bond, Charles said: 'Noah's Ark is their home and they could not possibly be separated from each other. 'You just have to remember who you're dealing with when you are with them, though. 'It's when you forget that these fellows are wild animals that you get yourself in trouble.'   The trio's new habitat had to be constructed carefully, in order to accommodate its occupants.. Jama said: 'The clubhouse had to be very sturdy for the guys, because they all sleep in it together,'   She added: 'We had to include a creek, because the tiger and the bear both like to be in water.'

Honor-seeking often motivates people more than any other desire in the world. If a person would give up his demands for status, he would be content as long as his minimum needs for food, clothing, and shelter were met.

A great part of a person's need for money comes from his demand for status. Because he wants the admiration of others, he feels a need for expensive clothing and a fancy home. A person who gives up his demand for approval will be able to clarify for what his actual needs are, and save himself from needless toil and suffering.

When you feel discouraged, you are likely to remember past failures and disappointments. This leads to more emotional pain and increases your discouragement. Make a conscious effort to remember any positive moment in your life. Even if you can only remember one time when you felt positive about yourself or only one time when you manifested confidence or strength, you presently have a resource that is yours for life. Calmly recall the positive feelings you once had and realize that since you have experienced confidence and strength once, you can continue to experience it in the future.

Make a habit of writing down your obligations and commitments in a notebook where you can review them. It will prevent many unnecessary problems.

Dog Fishing....and the Challenges of Life

Life is filled with challenges and difficulties in getting along with others - family, friends, fellow workers. How can one successfully defuse a situation and find a creative solution?

Many a person's first reaction is: "He can't do that to me. It's not right. He should do the right thing!" We first look to blame others. There is an old Spiritual proverb: The Almighty gave us two eyes - one a telescope to see the faults of others from afar; the second, a microscope to see our own faults.

The First Rule: Determine the reality of the situation. Whose fault is it? Am I culpable in any way? Why is the Almighty bringing ME this situation? What am I supposed to do to pass this test and to learn from this predicament? These questions put the situation in perspective and soften the emotions.

Too many people initially seek "justice and righteousness" - which often means seeking revenge. Instead of sweet and fulfilling, it ends badly and is destructive for everyone. There is an old adage, "He who seeks revenge should dig two graves."

Luckily for us, the Bible commands us, "You shall not take revenge nor bear a grudge against the children of your people" (Leviticus 19:18). Not only is revenge a bad idea, it's forbidden!

 

Pirkei Avos, Ethics of the Fathers, teaches "Who is mighty? One who subdues his passions, as it is written (Proverbs 16:32) 'One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and one whose temper is controlled than one who captures a city' ".

The Second Rule: Look at the possible solutions and their outcomes. This is where a person sees that all of those "solutions" that seem so "sweet" actually end in bodily harm and/or jail! Be creative to find a win-win answer. Success is measured by looking at the results of your actions.

Here's an example: A condo neighbor has the air conditioner drainage hose dripping from her balcony to the parking spot below - onto your car! You have politely asked her to move it, but she has forgotten and your car is being covered in a slurry mess as the water mixes with the dust to make your car look like modern art. Let your imagination go wild. How would you feel? What would you think? What would you like to do? Yell at her? Scream? Call the police? Write a letter to the condo board?

One clever fellow had this problem. What did he do? He brought her flowers! She was completely baffled. "Why are you giving me flowers?" The man softly said, "You're a good neighbor ... and I really appreciate your efforts to keep your air conditioner from draining on my car." She thanked him and shut the door a bit confused. However, never again did she forget to move the hose. It is very difficult to get angry at someone who brings you a gift!

 

Right now I am looking at a more personal problem. As we have moved into a  new house, our bedroom faces the street. We have a renter accross the street (the impliation is that as a non-homeowner, she is less responsive), who has three dogs constantly yapping and last night woke us up at 2:00 in the morning. How to deal with the noise? I am looking in myself for creative solutions!!

Sometimes a problem can be dealt with by making a paradigm shift -looking at it from a different direction.

The Almighty did not put us in this world so that we can cruise through with all of the comforts of life, no pain, no challenges and then to die peacefully under a beach umbrella with a piîa colada in hand. The Almighty placed us in this world to face challenges, to perfect our character and to grow spiritually. That's why life is filled with challenges. It is our choice whether to view the challenges as obstacles or stepping stones!
